CertainTeed® commissions low-slope labor study

CertainTeed Corp., Malvern, Pa., and Trinity | ERD, Seattle, have released a five-year commissioned study, "Factors Impacting Low-Slope Roofing Costs: A National Labor Study."

The study analyzes factors affecting labor efficiency and profitability for 45 North American roof systems installed using six roof covers in 18 configurations. The study aims to help roofing contractors generate more earnings by providing information to help their crews work smarter, improve job management and decrease labor costs.

The study compares labor efficiencies across various common roof systems and examines the impact project parameters such as climate and roof design have on labor efficiency, helping roofing contractors improve their ability to adjust estimates appropriately and avoid making common low-slope roofing mistakes.

The study is available at www.certainteed.com/laborstudy.

TAMKO® Building Products donates roof system

TAMKO Building Products Inc., Joplin, Mo., has donated a roof system for Patriot PAWS Service Dogs' new guest house. Patriot PAWS Service Dogs is a Texas-based nonprofit organization that trains and provides service dogs to disabled U.S. veterans at no cost.

The two-bedroom, two-bathroom guest house was built with support from the Dallas Builders Association and complies with the Americans with Disabilities Act. The house will provide space for veterans to stay with their new service dogs during the two-week pairing process. During this period, veterans live and train with their dogs before being sent home with their furry caregivers.

"Although Patriot PAWS is located in Texas, their impact is felt nationwide, and we are proud to have members who generously help when called upon," says Sheena Beaver, education director and executive administrator for the Dallas Builders Association. "Without TAMKO Building Products' donation, this project would have been financially burdensome, and this beacon of hope would still be just a dream."

In addition, TAMKO Building Products has announced Art Weiss, TAMKO Building Products' chief compliance and ethics officer, was elected vice president of the joint governing board for the Society of Corporate Compliance & Ethics and the Health Care Compliance Association (SCCE/HCCA). SCCE/HCCA provides training, certification, networking and other resources to improve the quality and knowledge of the compliance profession. He served as secretary and treasurer before becoming the joint SCCE/HCCA governing board's second vice president in November 2017.

ATAS International hosts manufacturing day

ATAS International Inc., Allentown, Pa., hosted students from Lehigh Career and Technical Institute and Parkland High School during its sixth annual Manufacturing Day celebration Oct. 5, 2018. Manufacturing Day addresses common misconceptions about manufacturing by giving manufacturers an opportunity to "open their doors" and show what manufacturing is all about.

Students, school staff and families toured ATAS International to experience the processes in which metal components for the building envelope are manufactured. Guests also participated in a question-and-answer session during which several ATAS International employees spoke about their positions in the production, purchasing, international sales, inside technical sales, marketing, technical services, maintenance, clerical and human resources departments. Students learned every person within a manufacturing company must work together to produce a quality product and provide exemplary service to customers.

San Diego association donates roof repairs

The San Diego Roofing Contractors Association (SDRCA) has completed a donated roof system installation on Canine Companions for Independence's Southwest Training Center in Oceanside, Calif. Canine Companions for Independence is a nonprofit organization that provides trained assistance dogs to children, adults and military veterans with disabilities. Each dog costs $50,000 to raise and train, but Canine Companions for Independence gives recipients assistance dogs free of charge.

SDRCA previously had connected with Canine Companions for Independence in 2017 when the organization received some of the proceeds from SDRCA's 51st Annual SDRCA Golf Classic. When SDRCA found out Canine Companions for Independence's Oceanside training center had numerous roof leaks, SDRCA nominated the organization for SDRCA's Build-A-Roof (BAR) program, an annual tradition during which the association provides a new roof system to a charity or family in need.

After SDRCA's BAR committee toured the Oceanside facility and confirmed Canine Companions for Independence as the 2018 BAR program recipient, SDRCA called upon its members to donate the materials and labor needed to install a silicone roof system on the training center. NRCA member APOC Roofing & Waterproofing, Long Beach, Calif., donated a majority of materials used for the project and provided silicone application training for participating roofing contractors. Eberhard Benton Roofing, San Diego; Premier Roofing California Inc., Spring Valley; Roofing Specialists of San Diego, San Diego; NRCA member Roofmaster Products Co., Los Angeles; NRCA member RSI Roofing & Solar, San Diego; San Diego County Roofing Inc., San Diego; and Top Line Roofing, San Diego, also helped complete the project.
