MCA launches new program

The Metal Construction Association (MCA) has launched a new steep-slope metal roofing certification program. The MCA Metal Roofing Certification Program certifies products, giving consumers more confidence and trust in buying metal roofing materials. The program ensures the correct paint coatings and base metals are chosen and differentiates and compares products of varying quality levels. To qualify for certification, products must meet requirements such as base-metal quality and weathering exposure for paint coatings.

"I think this program is a win for everyone involved in the residential and steep-slope metal roofing industry from steel companies through consumers," says James Bush, chairman of the MCA Certification Program Committee. "There now is a way to clearly differentiate quality levels and show consumers how to apply industry standards to identify the most appropriate metal roofing products for their needs and budget."

ERA releases study results

The EPDM Roofing Association (ERA) has released results of a study that determined the improvement rates of long-term life-cycle costs for EPDM roof membranes.

Comparing warranty performance and EPDM roof system costs from the past 20 years, the study looked at the warranty records of Firestone Building Products Co., Carmel, Ind., and Carlisle SynTec Inc., Carlisle, Pa. Results showed that the most significant improvement is seen when EPDM systems are used as re-cover roof systems. The study is available at www.epdmroofs.org.

"Because warranty service records also identify when a roof was installed and when maintenance was performed, they can provide an accurate chronology of roof performance," says Jim Hoff, vice president of marketing and technology at Firestone Building Products. "Based on the maintenance records assessed during this study, the improvement in performance of EPDM during the past 20 years makes the cost of maintaining an EPDM roof system for 10 years almost negligible."
