Firestone Building Products acquires Gaco Western

Firestone Building Products Co. LLC, Indianapolis, has acquired Gaco Western, a Seattle-based manufacturer of silicone roof systems and waterproofing and spray foam insulation solutions for residential and commercial applications.

The acquisition enables Firestone Building Products to offer customers an expanded commercial and residential product portfolio and capitalize on increasing demand for liquid coating products.

Polyglass U.S.A. celebrates anniversary

Polyglass U.S.A. Inc., Deerfield Beach, Fla., celebrated its 25th anniversary in March. Polyglass U.S.A., a manufacturer of polymer-modified bitumen roof membranes, elastomeric roof coatings and underlayments, was founded in 1992 with its first location in Fernley, Nev. During its 25 years, Polyglass U.S.A. has added several additional locations and contributed to the roofing industry by introducing products that extend a roof system's life cycle and help manage building energy loads.

Polyglass U.S.A. celebrated its anniversary during the 2017 International Roofing Expo® in Las Vegas by inviting roofing industry professionals to watch product demonstrations at its booth and attend a "Roof Top" celebration March 2.

Manufacturers receive recognition

CertainTeed Corp., Valley Forge, Pa.; Polyglass U.S.A. Inc., Deerfield Beach, Fla.; and TAMKO Building Products, Joplin, Mo., received recognition from Woodbury, Minn.-based NEMEON Inc., a purchasing and services cooperative of independent roofing and siding distributors, during NEMEON's annual meeting in Palm Springs, Calif., in February.

CertainTeed and Polyglass U.S.A. received 2016 Vendor of the Year Awards for their exceptional support of the cooperative. The award annually honors suppliers that demonstrate long-term support, high levels of service and commitment to quality product offerings. TAMKO Building Products received the prestigious Chairman's Award for consistently upholding the values of NEMEON and its distributors.

Owens Corning announces sweepstakes winner

Owens Corning, Toledo, Ohio, announced the grand prize winner of its Accelerate Sweepstakes March 1 during the 2017 International Roofing Expo® (IRE) in Las Vegas. Chris Amiot, owner of Advantage Construction Inc., East Bethel, Minn., was awarded a 2017 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray Coupe, a trip for two to the 2018 IRE and a $25,000 cash prize.

Launched in April 2016, the Accelerate Sweepstakes was created to rally Owens Corning Roofing Contractor Network members around a year-long initiative designed to increase awareness of Owens Corning's roofing products, optimize efficiency and leverage distribution channels. During the sweepstakes, contractors submitted invoices for various roofing products as entries to win prizes. More than 146,000 entries were submitted, and several contractors received prizes during quarterly drawings, including racing sunglasses, coolers, tablets, a racing-themed office chair and passes to attend a one-day racing school.

A.C.T. Metal Deck Supply holds sweepstakes

A.C.T. Metal Deck Supply, Aurora, Ill., kicked off its Cubs & Cruise Chicago Weekend Sweepstakes during the 2017 International Roofing Expo® (IRE) in March.

Companies that purchase a metal deck from A.C.T. Metal Deck Supply from now through the end of the year automatically will be entered to win the sweepstakes. The sweepstakes offers the winner a summer weekend experience for four people and includes roundtrip airfare to Chicago, transportation, hotel accommodations for two nights, tickets to a Chicago Cubs baseball game at Wrigley Field and a private yacht cruise on Lake Michigan. The winner will be chosen randomly and announced at the 2018 IRE in New Orleans.

Consultant becomes subsidiary of Applied Technical Services

Dedicated Roof and Hydro-Solutions LLC, Alexandria, Va., has become a subsidiary of Applied Technical Services Inc., Marietta, Ga.

Founded in 1997, Dedicated Roof and Hydro-Solutions provides building envelope services to clients in Virginia. The business transaction enables the company to provide additional services to clients, including suspended access and fall-protection engineering services, and structural engineering and laboratory services.

ASTM International welcomes new president

ASTM International has announced Katharine Morgan began serving as president of the organization Feb. 1. Morgan succeeds James A. Thomas, who served as president for 25 years.

Morgan is a 33-year veteran of ASTM International. She served as executive vice president during 2015-16 and has served as vice president of technical committee operations, leading a 50-member team that supports the volunteer work of ASTM International's 30,000 members worldwide.

Morgan also serves on the board of the American National Standards Institute and is a member of the Council of Engineering and Scientific Executives, the International Consumer Product Health and Safety Organization, the Society for Standards Professionals and the American Society of Association Executives. She is a former member of the Standards Council of Canada's Standards Development Organization Advisory Committee.

SPFA announces award winners

The Spray Polyurethane Foam Alliance (SPFA) has announced the recipients of its 2017 Spray Foam National Industry Excellence Awards. The awards are given to companies whose project submissions best demonstrate innovative uses of spray foam in one of five categories: commercial wall foam, residential wall foam, roof foam greater than 40,000 square feet, roof foam less than 40,000 square feet and specialty applications.

Insulation Solutions, East Peoria, Ill.; NRCA member Puff Inc., Charlottesville, Va.; NRCA member Wedge Roofing Inc., Petaluma, Calif.; and NRCA member West Roofing Systems Inc., La Grange, Ohio, each received an award.

ARMA announces QARC award winners

The Asphalt Roofing Manufacturers Association (ARMA) has announced the winners of its 2017 Quality Asphalt Roofing Case-Study (QARC) Awards.

The QARC Awards recognize exceptional asphalt roofing projects completed in the U.S. and Canada. This year's program recognized quality installations of beautiful and high-performing roof systems on three diverse buildings—a residential home in North Carolina, a commercial building in Florida and a firehouse in Washington.

The following received 2017 QARC Awards:

  • Gold: Chapel Hill Roofing Co., Chapel Hill, N.C., for the Triangle Home, Chapel Hill
  • Silver: NRCA member Advanced Roofing Inc., Fort Lauderdale, Fla., for Broward County Addiction Recovery Center's Stephen R. Booher Building, Coral Springs, Fla.
  • Bronze: Cascade Roofing Co., Burlington, Wash., for Burlington Fire Department, Burlington

MCA announces award winners

The Metal Construction Association (MCA) announced the winners of its 2016 Chairman's Awards during the MCA Winter Meeting held Jan. 23-25 in Weston, Fla. The Chairman's Awards recognize MCA member companies whose exceptional building projects honor innovation and creativity while highlighting how metal products help achieve outstanding building design. Recipients are selected from projects submitted to Metal Architecture magazine's annual Design Awards Program.

MCA's 2016 Chairman's Awards recipients include 3A Composites USA Inc., Statesville, N.C.; Accurate Perforating Co. Inc., Chicago; Arconic Architectural Products, Eastman, Ga.; NRCA member Arkema Inc., King of Prussia, Pa.; NRCA member D.I. Roof Seamers, Corinth, Miss.; McElroy Metal Inc., Bossier City, La.; Metal Sales Manufacturing Corp., Louisville, Ky.; Precoat Metals, St. Louis; RHEINZINK America Inc., Woburn, Mass.; Umicore Building Products USA Inc., Raleigh, N.C.; and Valspar Corp., Minneapolis, Minn.

In addition, MCA announced the winners of its 2016 Triumph Awards. The Triumph Awards honor the many kinds of people and companies that champion the growth and development of the metal construction industry. Honorees are nominated by their peers and judged by a 10-person committee each year.

Scott Kriner, a consultant for MCA and president of Green Metal Consulting Inc., Macungie, Pa., and Brian Partyka, a member of MCA's executive committee and president of NRCA member Drexel Metals Inc., Louisville, Ky., received Industry Champion of the Year Awards. Bob Fittro, John Garvey and Shawn Zuver, founders of Unlimited Reach Media Inc., Findlay, Ohio, and DesignandBuildwithMetal.com, received an Industry Media Executive/Journalist of the Year Award. PSMJ Resources Inc., Newton, Mass., producers of METALCON, received a Corporate/Individual Citizen of the Year Award. Mark Bus, national sales manager for NRCA member ATAS International Inc., Allentown, Pa.; Dustin Haddock, product and systems development manager for S-5!, Colorado Springs, Colo.; Josey Parks, president and CEO of Metal Roofs of Texas, Fort Worth; and Jonathan Rider, chief administrative officer of Developmental Industries, Corinth, Miss., the parent company of NRCA member D.I. Roof Seamers, received Industry Young Movers and Shakers Awards. Donn Couch, district manager for NRCA member SFS intec Inc., Wyomissing, Pa., received an Industry Sales Person of the Year Award. Oded Shemla, CEO of Applosophy, New York, received an Entrepreneur of the Year Award.

MRA appoints executive director

The Metal Roofing Alliance (MRA) has appointed Renee Ramey executive director of the organization following Bill Hippard's retirement.

Ramey will be responsible for managing MRA's North American marketing program to increase metal roofing's residential market share. She has more than 20 years of marketing and management experience and most recently served as marketing and human resources manager for Cascadia Metals, Brandon, Manitoba. Ramey also is active in several industry organizations, including the Association of Women in the Metals Industries, Pacific Northwest Steel Fabricators Association and American Marketing Association.
