CertainTeed receives safety award

CertainTeed Corp., Valley Forge, Pa., was awarded the Diamond Safety Award by its parent company, Saint-Gobain Corp., Paris, for exemplary health and safety performance at its roofing granule manufacturing plant in Glenwood, Ark., which recently celebrated five years of operation without a single recordable injury. This is the 11th time CertainTeed has received the award.

The Diamond Award is Saint-Gobain's highest environment, health and safety award and part of a commitment to social responsibility and employee welfare.

"The Diamond Safety Award signifies the importance of safety in everyone's life," says Mark Proffit, plant manager for the Glenwood facility. "It represents the dedication Saint-Gobain has to providing safe places to work for employees worldwide."

Evergreen Slate opens Texas office

Evergreen Slate Co. LLC, Granville, N.Y., has announced the opening of its new southern regional sales office in Sanger, Texas. The new office will serve Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Oklahoma and Texas.

"We are excited about establishing a local presence in an important market for Evergreen Slate's wide range of slate roofing and structural products," says Fred Whitridge, president and chief executive officer of Evergreen Slate.

United Coatings announces alliance

NRCA member United Coatings Inc., Spokane Valley, Wash., has announced a joint product and marketing alliance with Technical Roofing Solutions Inc., Brookfield, Wis. The companies will market, warehouse, sell and warrant each other's materials.

Keith Coultrap, president of United Coatings, says the alliance will allow the two companies to "service contractors' needs across North America."

G & E Roofing is recognized

In conjunction with its 30th anniversary, G & E Roofing Co. Inc., Augusta, Maine, recently was recognized as 2006 Business of the Year by the Kennebec Valley Chamber of Commerce for its profound influence in the business environment and economy.

G & E Roofing also was one of five businesses to receive the 2006 Governor's Award for Business Excellence for commitment to its community, employees and excellence in service.

NERCA announces new officers

The North/East Roofing Contractors Association (NERCA) announced its new slate of officers during its 80th Convention & Trade Show in Mashantucket, Conn.

Michael K. Meyer, president of Canopy Roofing Systems, Briarcliff Manor, N.Y., was elected president; David P. Cazeault, president of J.T. Cazeault & Sons of Plymouth Inc., North Plymouth, Mass., was elected first vice president; Malcolm Glidden, president of Glidden Roofing Corp., Scarborough, Maine, was elected second vice president; and Charles Gorman, vice president of Gorman Roofing Inc., Cumberland, R.I., was elected treasurer.

CRA awards contractors

The Colorado Roofing Association (CRA) announced award winners at its Fifth Annual Awards Dinner Feb. 9. Winners included the following: Arapahoe Roofing and Sheet Metal Inc., Broomfield, Colo.—first place for steep-slope job of the year; D & D Roofing Inc., Commerce City, Colo.—second place for steep-slope job of the year; Academy Roofing Inc., Aurora, Colo., and D & D Roofing—third place for steep-slope job of the year; B & M Roofing of Colorado Inc., Frederick, Colo.—first place for low-slope job of the year; Arapahoe Roofing and Sheet Metal and Roof Check Inc., Longmont, Colo.—second place for low-slope job of the year; and United Materials Roofing and Sheet Metal, Denver—third place for low-slope job of the year.

In addition, CRA awarded William E. Kugler the CRA Lifetime Achievement Award. Kugler has worked at United Materials Roofing and Sheet Metal since 1958 and served as its president since 1970.

Digital Facilities conducts study

Digital Facilities Corp., Acton, Mass., has announced it is conducting a two-year study of K-12 schools in North America to determine which roof management processes yield the biggest return on investment of time and resources. The study will focus on how managing roof condition information before allocating repair dollars can improve roof system life cycles.

Participants will be required to maintain a database of 10 buildings or 30 roof sections; have computer hardware that meets the requirements for RoofPro; pay a $750 annual maintenance fee for software updates and technical support; and be involved in online meeting forums to share findings and statistics that will be used in a published post-study summary.

Participants will receive Digital Facilities' RoofPro 4.1 asset management software and four hours of individual online training. For more information, go to www.digital-facilities.net.
