MFM Building Products extends representation

MFM Building Products Corp., Coshocton, Ohio, has reached an agreement with Richmond, Va.-based SMS Group LLC to represent MFM Building Products in Delaware, Maryland and Virginia. SMS Group currently represents MFM Building Products in North Carolina and South Carolina. SMS Group services one-step roofing, siding and window whole distributors; two-step building material distributors; and co-op affiliated professional and lumber yards.

In addition, MFM Building Products' Ultra HT Wind & Water Seal™ high-temperature roof underlayment has formally been approved by Miami-Dade County to comply with Florida Building Code, including the High Velocity Hurricane Zone.

GAF receives Emmy® nominations

GAF, Wayne, N.J., has received seven Emmy Award nominations for its commercials starring Jesse the Jack Russell Terrier. GAF earned three nominations in the TV Commercials: Single Spot/Campaign category; two nominations in the Director: Short Form (Promos, PSAs, TV Commercials, Opens, etc.) category; and two nominations in the Editor: Short Form category. In addition, GAF has announced its 2014 Enter for an Experience sweepstakes, giving roofing contractors the chance to win one of three unique "life experiences" with a major celebrity. The first experience was coordinated through a "Get Biking" promotion, which ran April 1-30. The grand prize is to meet Paul Teutal Sr. from the television shows "American Chopper" and "Orange County Choppers." One winner will receive round-trip airfare and group transportation for two people; a hotel room for two nights; a lunch and ride-along with Teutal in the Hope for Heroes ride June 29 in Newburgh, N.Y.; and a bike shop tour at the Orange County Chopper location in Newburgh. Graco wins award

Graco Inc., Minneapolis, won the gold award in the manufacturing category during the Connected World® Awards Gala Feb. 13 in Chicago. Graco won for its creation and implementation of Graco InSite™ Remote Reporting Technology, enabling contractors using electric and hydraulic Reactor® equipment to view activity from multiple job sites in real time. The Connected World Awards recognize companies that successfully leverage M2M technology to solve a critical business pain point with quantifiable results.

Atlas Roofing debuts express pickup service

Atlas Roofing Corp., Atlanta, has debuted Atlas Express Service for LTL (less than truckload) product pickups in the greater Chicago region at its new regional distribution center in Elk Grove Village, Ill. IB Roof Systems supports RCI Foundation

IB Roof Systems, Irving, Texas, donated $2,000 to the Lewis W. Newlan Educational Fund during the annual RCI Foundation Auction March 23 in Anaheim, Calif. The RCI Foundation donation was based on the number of attendees who visited IB Roof Systems' booth during the 19th Annual RCI Conference and Trade Show March 20-25. At the IB Roof Systems booth, attendees answered questions within one minute on the "IB-IQ" questionnaire. For each submission, $20 was donated to the foundation to help provide student scholarships in the field of building study. The RCI Foundation is a nonprofit 501(c)3 organization separate and independent from RCI Inc., financially supporting activities that advance building envelope knowledge, including publications, educational programs and research.

Owens Corning wins safety award

Owens Corning, Toledo, Ohio, has received the 2014 Green Cross for Safety medal, the highest honor from the National Safety Council. The National Safety Council presents the award annually to an organization with outstanding safety performance and a commitment to improving the quality of life in the communities where its employees work and live.

During the past 12 years, Owens Corning has eliminated about 95 percent of recordable injuries at its 90 manufacturing plants. Owens Corning implements safety standards by engaging all employees in owning and continuously improving safety processes; adopting a global safety stand; expanding efforts to assess and reduce risk; and banning employee use of cell phones for company business while driving.

Carlisle celebrates new manufacturing line

Carlisle Construction Materials, Charlotte, N.C., celebrated the completion of its new PVC manufacturing line with a grand opening event at its Greenville, Ill., campus April 28. The production line can manufacture PVC roof membranes with a variety of product enhancements, including KEE HP PVC; produce membranes up to 10 feet by 10 inches; and manufacture polyester- and fiberglass-reinforced PVC membranes and fleece-backed PVC membranes in a single pass.

Firestone recognizes award winners

Firestone Building Products Co. LLC, Indianapolis, recognized 189 firms across North America with its 2014 Partner in Quality Award. The annual award honors Firestone Building Products Red Shield™ Licensed Roofing Contractors for a high level of craftsmanship and superior roof system installation skills.

Red Shield Licensed Roofing Contractors are required to complete extensive product installation training. To qualify for the 2014 award, contractors had to install four warranted Firestone Building Products roofs during each of the past five years; maintain at least 1 million square feet of Firestone Building Products roofs under warranty; and achieve an annual Quality Incidence Rating (QIR) of 1.5 or less (QIR measures performance based on warranty repair incidences per million square feet under warranty).

Winners are able to participate in the Firestone Building Products Community Service Program, making them eligible for a $1,000 annual credit to donate labor and materials for community roofing projects. Metal-Era adds production shift

Metal-Era Inc., Waukesha, Wis., has added a weekend shift to its production department, which now operates Monday through Sunday. This third shift was added March 3 to help improve lead times on customer orders. A training program will be implemented to help the production team better understand operations.

Contractor passes away

Dalsin

Michael G. Dalsin, sales and project manager for John A. Dalsin & Son Inc., Minneapolis, passed away March 31. He was 49 years old.

Dalsin had three passions: his children, his work and golf. He was the fourth generation at John A. Dalsin & Son and is survived by his parents, Robert, Barbara and Yvonne; children, Angela, Matthew, Nicholas and Ryan; siblings, Amy, Angie, James, Kenneth, Mary and Rachael; 10 nieces and nephews; and many other family members and friends. Roofing Solutions opens new facility

Roofing Solutions, Prairieville, La., has opened a new facility in New Orleans. The new fabrication shop will enable Roofing Solutions to better serve its growing list of private and public clients in the New Orleans area.

In addition, Roofing Solutions served as the Presenting Sponsor for The American Institute of Architects New Orleans Chapter's 2014 Design Awards Gala held March 27 at the National World War II Museum's new U.S. Freedom Pavilion in New Orleans. This is the second year Roofing Solutions sponsored the event to honor the bond the company shares with the New Orleans' architectural community. James Carville, a well-known political consultant, was the keynote speaker, and honor and merit awards were given in a number of categories.

Contractor passes away

Killgore

Charles E. Killgore, vice president of Delta Roofing & Sheet Metal Corp., West Memphis, Ark., passed away April 5. He was 46 years old.

Killgore was vice president of Delta Roofing & Sheet Metal since 1991. He was heavily involved in the Boy Scouts in Crittenden County, serving as Cub Master and most recently committee chairman for Pack 292 and Boy Scout Troop 225. He also was a member of First Assembly of God in West Memphis. Killgore is survived by his mother, Mary Lou; wife, Christina; son, Alex; brothers, David, Edgar and Gary; nieces and nephews, Ashlyn, James, Jessica, Kyle, Ryan and Shawn; and great-nephew, Easton. Commercial Roofers presents roofing class

Commercial Roofers Inc., Las Vegas, has partnered with Denver-based Johns Manville to present ROOFING 101 classes. The classes focus on educating contractors about roofing, roofing products, installation processes, industry lingo and warranty information. Commercial Roofers has been meeting with several local contractors to present the 1 1/2-hour classes with question-and-answer sessions as an educational tool for up-and-coming project engineers and project managers. Burns & Scalo acquires David Hood & Sons

Burns & Scalo, Pittsburgh, has acquired Turtle Creek, Pa.-based David Hood & Sons Inc., a 90-year-old roofing company. The strategic acquisition will help increase Burns & Scalo's residential market and complement its commercial business unit. David Hood & Sons now will operate as David Hood Roofing, a Scalo Company, and will continue to service customers from its Turtle Creek facility.

SRS Distribution acquires Myles F. Kelly

SRS Distribution Inc., McKinney, Texas, has acquired Harrison, N.J-based Myles F. Kelly Inc., a regional independent residential and commercial building products distributor serving the northern New Jersey and Long Island, New York regions from six locations in Bergenfield, Chatham, Harrison, Perth Amboy and Roselle Park, N.J., and Farmingdale, N.Y. The branches serve a customer base of home improvement contractors, residential and commercial roofing contractors, and home builders.

Myles F. Kelly currently employs 90 people. Jeff Kelly, Myles F. Kelly's current owner, and the entire sales and operations team will stay with the company. All Myles F. Kelly locations will continue to operate under the company name and become part of SRS Distribution's portfolio of distributors.

RCI announces competition winners and board of directors

RCI Inc. recognized the winners of its 2014 Document Competition during its annual award luncheon held at the 29th RCI International Convention and Trade Show March 23 in Anaheim, Calif. The document competition is an annual competition to recognize members' excellence in roofing, waterproofing and exterior wall construction project documentation.

First-place winners include Marcus Dell, P.Eng., managing principal, senior building for Vancouver, British Columbia-based RDH, for excellence in the Large Roofing/Waterproofing/Exterior Wall Project Documents category for construction valued greater than $750,000, and Dennis Spina, RCA, AIA, co-founder of Syracuse, N.Y.-based Bell & Spina, for excellence in the Report Writing category and the Small Roofing/Waterproofing/Exterior Wall Project Documents category for construction valued less than $750,000.

NRCA now is accepting applications for its Future Executives Institute (FEI) class Sept. 28-Oct. 1 at Northwestern University's Kellogg School of Management, Chicago. Classes are taught by Northwestern University professors, industry leaders and field experts. FEI is a comprehensive learning experience focused on leading and managing thriving roofing businesses. The three-year program is based on in-depth discussions and relationship building, with class sizes limited to 30 participants. The deadline for applications is Aug. 1.
