The three projects that most effectively demonstrate the beauty, affordability and reliability of asphalt roofing will win cash prizes and be featured in national roofing trade publications.

Submissions for the 2016 QARC Awards Program will be accepted through Dec. 31; there is no limit to the number of submissions roofing professionals may submit. MCA announces new research projects

The Metal Construction Association (MCA) has announced three new research projects it will be completing during the next several years.

The first research project is being conducted at the University of Florida, Gainesville, and will evaluate the air permeability of metal roof panels to measure the level of wind-uplift resistance. The project's goal is to develop a new test method that can more realistically reflect the wind-uplift resistance of various metal roof systems.

The second research project is being funded by a grant awarded to the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, Berkeley, Calif. The study will evaluate the ability of cool wall panels and other types of wall materials to reduce building energy usage. The results of the study will be beneficial for California cities that are trying to reduce building energy usage.

The third research project was proposed in conjunction with the Spray Polyurethane Foam Alliance and the Metal Building Manufacturers Association to study the effects of spray polyurethane foam insulation on metal panels. The study aims to address concerns about oil canning and potential damage to paint films as a result of spray foam curing. The results of the study will be used to generate best practices guidelines for using spray foam insulation with metal wall and roof assemblies.
