What is your position within your company?
I am senior marketing applications specialist for BASF, Minneapolis.

What is the most unusual roofing project you've performed?
The most unusual project was installing a spray polyurethane foam (SPF) and elastomeric coatings system on the Ford® Mustang plant in Dearborn, Mich., during the late 1980s. The system was installed over 1 million square feet of federal tile—clay tile preformed into 2- by 4-foot panels laid over structural framing—and metal and built-up roof systems.

Why did you become involved in the roofing industry?
I grew up in Mauston, Wis., and a couple of my friends were setting up a business to install SPF in metal buildings. They needed someone to help set up the business and sell jobs, so I helped them start up Custofoam Corp., Mauston. We continued to grow the company and began installing SPF in residential, cold storage, tank and roof applications. We moved ahead cautiously and had a lot of help from friends and family. We had our share of learning experiences along the way.

What's your favorite movie of all time?
My favorite movie is "The Dirty Dozen." I tend to like old-time war and Western movies.

Do you think having experience as a contractor, distributor and manufacturer gives you an advantage in your current position?
Yes, I do. Every segment of the business has its own set of concerns. I have been lucky to have worked in all segments, and it has helped me understand the concerns. While working on various industry committees, my experience has been a great asset when helping to create guidelines.

What is your fondest childhood memory?
My favorite childhood memory is working with my father and mother who owned a small office supply business. I helped in the store and with sales and learned a lot. The experience I gained and trust they placed in me was invaluable.

Name one extravagance you allow yourself.
I have a red Ford Mustang convertible I enjoy driving on road trips through Wisconsin with my wife.

Do you have a favorite saying?
"Go Pack, go!"

What is your favorite stress reliever?
I like to go out for a Friday fish fry. Getting out and away from work helps me wind down.

If you could have any superpower, what would it be? Why?
I think I would want X-ray vision so I could see what is wrong with roof system installations and fix them.

What is your roofing industry involvement?
I have been a member of NRCA's Manual Update Committee for metal panel and SPF roof systems for several years. I also have been a member of the Spray Polyurethane Foam Alliance, ASTM International, RCI and several other related organizations.

I served in the Army, Wisconsin Army National Guard and U.S. Army Reserves for more than 23 years, and I am a retired Major.
