What is your position within your company?
I am project manager for Tecta America Kentucky, Louisville.

What is the most unusual roofing project you’ve performed?
We recently completed a design build project for the city of Louisville. A vegetative roof system was installed on one building, and the building next to it received a reflective PVC roof system. We rerouted the roof drains into rain gardens to allow natural drainage into the ground instead of the sewer system.

Why did you become involved in the roofing industry?
Becoming involved in the industry was a natural progression for me. I always tend to get involved with organizations that help or serve others, and I enjoy working on projects with a broad scope.

If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go?
I would like to go on hunting and fishing trips throughout North America. Since I was young, I have wanted to go elk hunting in the Rocky Mountains.

What song are you listening to repeatedly?
I currently am wearing out a couple of discs by a local bluegrass band named Whiskey Bent Valley.

What was your first roofing experience?
During a summer while I was in school, I started working for a commercial roofing company. I spent a lot of time moving gravel and washing seams.

What is your roofing industry involvement?
For the past several years, I have been serving on the Kentucky Roofing Contractors Association’s board of directors and currently serve as president. I also currently serve on three NRCA committees and recently was elected to NRCA’s board of directors.

What three items always are in your fridge?
Hot sauce, pickles and barbeque sauce

What do you consider your most rewarding experiences?
The opportunities I have had to teach in various settings have been the most rewarding. It is great to teach something new to someone, especially if it can help them, such as learning how to swim.

What is a motto you live by?
“Be prepared.” I learned it in Boy Scouts.

What is your favorite part of your job?
My favorite part of my job is interacting with lots of people, either on the job site or in the office. I also enjoy getting out and installing roof systems when I can—it feels productive in a tangible way.

My favorite part about working in the roofing industry is …
The people—there seems to be a certain character of the people in the industry I have not found anywhere else. Everyone I have encountered seems to be good-natured, friendly and helpful.

People would be surprised to know …
I have a master’s degree in philosophy and am a long-distance running enthusiast. I completed two marathons in 2013 and plan to run another this fall.

What are you favorite items on your desk?
A turkey call and hot coffee

What item can you never leave the house without?
My glasses, so I can see where I am going!

What’s the most exciting/adventurous thing you have done?
My wife, Dianne, and I have been on some fabulous ski trips and fishing trips in Alaska.
