The NRCA Building Codes Manual, Third Edition is designed to help you use model building codes and understand the roofing-related provisions they contain. It provides detailed analyses of building code requirements for specific roof system types contained in the International Code Council's (ICC's) 2006 International Building Code,® ICC's 2006 International Residential Code® and the National Fire Protection Association's (NFPA's) 2006 edition of NFPA 5000: Building Construction and Safety Code.® The manual also lists roofing-related standards that are referenced in the model building codes and includes contact information for building code-related organizations and government agencies in all 50 states and 54 U.S. cities.

The 2006-07 Annual Market Survey provides industry market statistics, trends and information obtained from roofing contractors throughout the U.S. The survey includes information about commercial and residential roofing activity, roofing material usage, regional breakdowns, installation by material type and industry sales volumes.

The NRCA Roofing Manual: Metal Panel and SPF Roof Systems—2008 provides in-depth, comprehensive information about the design, materials and installation methods applicable to metal panel and spray polyurethane foam (SPF) roof systems commonly used for low- and steep-slope roofing applications. The 440-page manual is divided into two parts: Metal Panel Roof Systems and SPF Roof Systems. Metal Panel Roof Systems features 93 construction details and includes guidelines applicable to metal and metal panel roof systems. SPF Roof Systems includes application and design guidelines and 100 construction details, including new SPF reroofing construction details.

The Roofing Contractors Guide to Legal Claims, Lawsuits and Arbitration Proceedings has been updated and is intended to familiarize roofing contractors with the legal handling of construction disputes and how those disputes are resolved through lawsuits or arbitration proceedings. The guide summarizes what happens procedurally in a lawsuit, from the filing of a complaint through the appeals process. The guide also summarizes two alternative dispute-resolution procedures—arbitration and mediation.

NRCA joins safety committee

Tom Shanahan, NRCA's associate executive director of education and risk management, has been invited to serve as a member of the Advisory Committee on Construction Safety and Health (ACCSH) representing employer interests. This appointment, which became effective Nov. 30, 2007, is for a two-year period and may continue until a successor has been appointed.

ACCSH was established under the Contract Work Hours and Safety Standards Act to advise the U.S. secretary of labor on policy matters and the formulation of construction standards and regulations. The U.S. Department of Labor's assistant secretary for the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) also consults with ACCSH when OSHA recommends standards for construction activities. Advisory committee members are chosen based on their occupational safety and health knowledge, experience and affiliation with the construction industry.

"Falls from elevations, especially among roofing employees, continue to be the No. 1 cause of fatalities in the construction industry," says Michael G. Connors, an OSHA regional administrator. "NRCA's role on ACCSH will be to provide the viewpoints of the represented employers and of other OSHA stakeholders necessary to eliminate these fall hazards."
