SpecRight holds first training session

SpecRight, a program developed by NRCA and its industry partners to educate building owners, contractors and designers about how roof systems can help reduce energy costs and protect the environment, held its first training session March 17 in Chicago.

The class focused on teaching the 31 attendees how to help their customers save money by lowering their energy costs. Other discussion topics included cool roofs; green roofing; the latest trends in energy codes, including California's Title 24 and the Chicago Energy Code; ASHRAE 90.1-1999; Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design; and how to use NRCA's EnergyWise Roof Calculator.

Instructors for the training session were former NRCA President Dane Bradford, president of Bradford Roof Management, Billings, Mont.; John Schehl, NRCA's director of training; Chuck Scislo, an NRCA senior technical director; and Jennifer Ford-Smith, marketing manager for Johns Manville Roofing Systems Group, Denver.

NRCA to co-sponsor China Roofing & Waterproofing 2006

NRCA will co-sponsor the fourth annual China International Exhibition on Roofing & Waterproofing Technology at the China International Exhibition Center in Beijing Dec. 11-14. The trade show will feature more than 250 domestic and international exhibitors displaying the latest products, services and technologies in the roofing industry, and more than 12,000 people are expected to attend.

The exhibition, in partnership with the China National Waterproofing Building Materials Industry Association, is one of NRCA's efforts to become a more prominent international voice and facilitate trade within the roofing industry. Roofing equipment and materials manufacturers and distributors are encouraged to present their products at the exhibition.

Future Executives Institute teaches leadership skills

NRCA's Future Executives Institute (FEI), a three-year educational program designed to develop the management and leadership skills of future and current leaders of roofing companies, will begin its next program Oct. 22-25 in Chicago at Northwestern University's Kellogg School of Management. The program will examine management theory and practice and offer broader views of companies as they exist in the business world.

The FEI program will provide basic business information, current industry topics, leadership and personal-development opportunities, and team-building exercises. Courses will be taught by Northwestern University professors, industry leaders and field experts, and class size is limited to 30 roofing professionals to facilitate in-depth conversations and class relationships during the three-year program. Topics addressed during the first-year program will be expanded upon in years two and three.

Standard registration fees (after June 1) for the first-year program are $4,575 for NRCA members and $6,400 for nonmembers, which includes books, some meals, additional class activities and three nights' lodging fees at the Fitzpatrick Chicago Hotel in addition to a special meeting during the 2007 International Roofing Expo. Advance registration fees (by June 1) are $4,275 for NRCA members and $5,975 for nonmembers. If you prepay for all three years by June 1, registration fees are $12,075 for NRCA members and $17,175 for nonmembers.

NRLRC to hold 27th annual seminar

The National Roofing Legal Resource Center (NRLRC) will hold its 27th Annual Seminar, Roofing Issues: Decks to Dockets, Nov. 2-4 in Naples, Fla.

During the seminar, attendees will receive information from industry experts about current legal, contractual, technical, insurance and safety issues affecting their businesses. They also will have the opportunity to interact with peers, share ideas and best practices, and make important business contacts. The seminar is intended to provide new ideas, strategies and approaches for improving company operations, managing risks and ensuring continued success.

NRCA to hold Midyear Meetings

NRCA will hold its Midyear Meetings at The Four Seasons Hotel in Chicago July 11-15. NRCA's Executive Committee, board of directors, committees and task forces will meet to discuss NRCA and industry issues and plan for NRCA's 2006-07 fiscal year.

The Midyear Meetings will include the NRCA Midyear Reception at the Field Museum of Natural History, where attendees will be able to view "Tutankhamun and the Golden Age of the Pharaohs," a new museum exhibit chronicling the life of King Tut.
