NRF news

The National Roofing Foundation (NRF) is accepting applications for its 2006-07 academic scholarships.

The scholarships, which provide recipients with $1,000 per year for up to four years of undergraduate study, are awarded to employees, immediate family of employees or immediate family of NRCA contractor members. Applicants must be high-school seniors or graduates who plan to enroll or students who already are enrolled in a full-time undergraduate course of study at an accredited two- or four-year college, university, or vocational or technical school. Recipients may use the money to support their studies at any accredited post-secondary institution; scholarships are not limited to students planning to enter the roofingindustry.

Recipients will be chosen based on academic record, potential to succeed, leadership and participation in school and community activities, honors, work experience, statement of educational goals and third-party appraisal. Financial need is not considered. Applications must be received by Jan. 31, 2006, and winners will be notified by May 2006.

Alliance study

The Roofing Industry Alliance for Progress commissioned a study to explore the future of the roofing industry. The results of this study were published in a report, The Roofing Industry in 2025.

Industry leaders participated in a series of "future focus groups" that contributed to many aspects of the report, as well as identified areas for further research.

The report also includes interviews with construction industry experts and extensive trends research findings. It covers topics such as the potential labor pool, materials, energy efficiency, industry structure and globalization.

The report is intended to spark discussion and debate within the roofing industry and contains many references for more in-depth exploration of the ideas presented. The alliance hopes the concepts detailed in the report will engage the roofing industry in meaningful and purposeful conversation about the industry's future and prepare the entire roofing industry for a prosperous future.

The report is available for $40 to NRCA members and $80 to nonmembers. To order the report, contact NRCA InfoExpress at (866) ASK-NRCA (275-6722); fax (847) 299-1183; or visit NRCA's virtual store at shop.nrca.net.

Updated in 2004, the NRCA EnergyWise Roof Calculator is a software application that allows you to construct virtual roof assemblies to evaluate thermal efficiency and estimate annual energy costs. In addition, it allows you to develop a safety program in a format that is concise and professional. The CD-ROM contains the full set of NRCA Toolbox Talks I and II, NRCA's Pocket Guide to Safety and job-hazard assessment checklists by chapter topic.
