Unemployment falls in September

The U.S. unemployment rate decreased to 7.2 percent in September from 7.3 percent in August as U.S. employers added 148,000 jobs, according to USA Today. Economists were expecting to add 180,000 jobs.

Additionally, hiring growth in July and August was revised up by 9,000. July's job growth was revised down to 89,000 from 104,000, and August's job growth was revised up to 193,000 from 169,000.

In September, the professional and business services sector added 32,000 jobs; transportation and warehousing sector added 23,000 jobs; construction sector added 20,000 jobs; and health care sector added 7,000 jobs.

The leisure and hospitality, manufacturing and government sectors basically were unchanged.

There currently are 11.3 million unemployed people in the U.S.
