NRCA University offers free classes

This spring, NRCA University will be offering two free roofing safety classes: Roofing Safety: OSHA 30-hour Program and Focus 4 Safety.

The Roofing Safety: OSHA 30-hour Program will be held April 20-23 in Chicago; April 27-30 in Denver and Orlando, Fla.; and May 11-14 in Newark, N.J. Program attendees will learn how to find applicable standards for roofing work and will be better able to recognize and analyze workplace hazards to find workable solutions that comply with Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) regulations.

Focus 4 Safety is a half-day program that examines the safety hazards OSHA claims account for the greatest number of preventable fatalities in the construction industry: falls; electrocution; and struck-by, caught-in and caught-between accidents. The program also discusses what causes OSHA citations.

Focus 4 Safety will be held in Chicago April 24; Denver and Orlando May 1; Charlotte, N.C., May 6; Cincinnati May 8; San Francisco May 12; Seattle May 14; and Newark May 15.

NRCA partners with BuildSite

In February, NRCA and BuildSite LLC, Oakland, Calif., partnered to launch The Roofing Industry Product Center. The Roofing Industry Product Center is part of an NRCA/BuildSite Industry Information Center, which is accessible at www.nrca.net and www.buildsite.com and acts as an integrated single source for product and technical information to support NRCA members' day-to-day activities.

The Roofing Industry Product Center is a BuildSite-powered database containing information about roofing materials manufacturers and their products.

BuildSite Free lets users search and access product and manufacturer information and important documents. Users also can subscribe to BuildSite Software, a software as a service offering, which allows data to be pulled from the database and easily plugged into day-to-day workflow. In particular, BuildSite Software helps manage time-consuming processes such as architectural submittals.

For more information, contact Jeff Jarvis, NRCA's director of advertising, at (800) 323-9545, ext. 7512 or jjarvis@nrca.net or Doug Steele, BuildSite's director of sales, at (616) 735-0595 or dsteele@buildsite.com.

EnergyWise Roof Calculator Online has been updated

EnergyWise Roof Calculator Online has been updated to include information from the 2004 and 2007 versions of ASHRAE 90.1, "Energy Standard for Buildings Except Low-Rise Residential Buildings."

EnergyWise Roof Calculator Online is available for free at NRCA's Web site, www.nrca.net, and offers an interactive, graphic method of constructing virtual roof assemblies to evaluate thermal efficiency. This application will denote minimum thermal insulation requirements established by ASHRAE 90.1, versions 1999, 2004 and 2007. Users also will be able to determine whether a vapor retarder's placement is effective.

The application prompts users to enter specific roof assembly information, such as roof area, climatic region, heating appliance type and cost, roof openings and roofing materials to be used. Users then can generate a report summarizing the proposed roof assembly design, estimated heating and cooling costs, and required minimum thermal requirements.

For more information about EnergyWise Roof Calculator Online, contact Joan Crowe, NRCA's director of technical services, at (800) 323-9545, ext. 7576 or jcrowe@nrca.net.
