Moisture is not limited to reflective roof
systems
I am writing in response to NRCA's Associate Executive Director of
Technical Services Mark S. Graham's column "Unintended
consequences," January issue, page 23. Graham brings up a
number of good points, and his recommendations reflect sound design
practices. Not knowing any details regarding the roof systems that
experienced moisture accumulation, I cannot comment about them
specifically. However, I can point to billions of square feet of
reflective roof systems installed during the course of four decades
that have provided—and continue to provide—problem-free
service.
I would suggest the design principles Graham outlines are
equally applicable to all membrane types. Perhaps the problems
being reported and encountered are because of the ever-growing
trend to value engineer roof systems to cut costs.
