GAF Materials donates to "Extreme Makeover"

GAF Materials Corp., Wayne, N.J., donated roof systems to two episodes of "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition," which aired Oct. 9 and Oct. 21.

On the Oct. 9 episode, the Extreme Makeover team built a home for 10-year-old Anaiah Taylor, her mother and two younger sisters in Madison, Ga. GAF Materials donated its Grand Slate™ II Shingles, which feature GAF Materials' Advanced Protection® technology.

On the Oct. 21 episode, the Extreme Makeover team built a home for Brian Keefer and his family in Etters, Pa. Brian was paralyzed from a gymnastics injury in 2008. GAF Materials donated its Timberline® HD™ shingles to the main family house and the connected home, which has a separate entrance for Brian.

GAF Materials also has introduced its GAF storyboards. The lightweight, oversized books display actual-size shingle images that incorporate texture and accurate color samples.

Additionally, GAF Materials and Lifetime Network's "Designing Spaces" partnered to give a free roof system to the Ugliest Roof in America contest winners—Eileen and Jorge Tello and their daughter, Emmalie, of Port Chester, N.Y. GAF Materials installed its Camelot® Lifetime Designer Shingles, as well as its Deck-Armor™ roof deck protection, Weather Watch® leak barriers, Pro-Start starter strip shingles, Cobra® ridge vent and Timbertex® premium ridge cap shingles. The roof system is valued at up to $15,000. The family was featured on a "Designing Spaces" segment, which aired Oct. 21 and Oct. 28.

Dow Building Solutions builds research facility

Dow Building Solutions, Midland, Mich., has built a research and development facility at its Midland headquarters. The Spray Foam Application Technology Research Facility is a 2,000-square-foot spray booth and lab where researchers can evaluate the application of new spray polyurethane foam (SPF) chemistries and methods.

The facility was created to test liquid-applied construction solutions and materials, such as SPF and weatherproofing systems, to help better understand how spray products work in small- and large-scale applications. The research facility also is being used to provide education and training on applying and safely handling SPF products.

Owens Corning enters alliance

Owens Corning, Toledo, Ohio, has entered a strategic alliance with Earth911, the host of the largest recycling directory in North America, to expand shingle recycling opportunities for roofing contractors and consumers. The alliance broadens the scope of Owens Corning's shingle recycling program by providing access to contractors who use local shingle recyclers found on Earth911.com.

Roofing contractors who take the Owens Corning Roofing Shingle Recycling Pledge now can use the Earth911 Recycling Directory, the toll-free hotline, or the free iRecycle application for Android and iOS mobile devices to locate an expanded list of local recyclers in their areas. The directory is available at Earth911.com or by calling (800) CLEANUP (253-2687).

ABC Supply receives award

ABC Supply Co. Inc., Beloit, Wis., has received the 2011 Wisconsin 75 award program's Distinguished Performer Award. The award recognizes a company's commitment to its employees by encouraging empowerment and providing training assistance.

The Wisconsin 75 is an annual ranking and recognition of the largest closely held companies headquartered in Wisconsin. The list ranks the top 75 companies by revenue as determined by a voluntary submission of a qualifications form. ABC Supply was ranked No. 5 out of the 75 companies.

SPRI revises standard

SPRI has announced its "Wind Design Standard for Edge Systems Used with Low Slope Roofing Systems" has been revised and reapproved by the American National Standards Institute.

The standard's revision combines the performance requirements included in the current version with requirements addressed in FM 4435, "Approval Standard for Roof Perimeter Flashing."

The updated standard provides the basic requirements for wind-load resistance design and testing for roof edge securement, perimeter edge systems and nailers. It also provides minimum material thicknesses that lead to satisfactory flatness and designs to minimize corrosion. The standard is intended for use with the specifications and requirements manufacturers provide for their specific roofing materials and edge systems, excluding gutters, used in roof assemblies.

Aerialogics enters partnership

Aerialogics LLC has entered into an exclusive partnership with ServiceMagic, a website that connects homeowners to pre-screened, customer-rated service professionals. ServiceMagic will offer Aerialogics' aerial measurement services to program contractors when a reroofing job, photovoltaic system installation or other property bid opportunity occurs.

Aerialogics also has formed a formal technology partnership agreement with Wood Dale, Ill.-based Disaster Kleenup International's (DKI's) cooperative buying program, DKI Procurement.

DKI Procurement will market Aerialogics' aerial measurement reporting services to DKI membership to gain greater measurement accuracy and increased response time in property damage claims documentation and executing roofing projects with less material waste.

Beacon Exit Planning founder receives award

Pinnacle Equity Solutions, a national exit strategy, training and solutions firm, has presented Kevin Kennedy, founder and chief executive officer of Beacon Exit Planning LLC, with its third annual Excellence in Exit Planning Achievement Award.

The award recognizes Kennedy's national leadership in the field and success at guiding private business owners in their company exits and was presented Oct. 6 and 7 at Pinnacle Equity Solutions' Exit Planning Conference in Boston.

The site includes submittal information for property owners and project teams, as well as resources for those preparing for the next generation of green building codes and links to roofing industry resources.

DaVinci Roofscapes® has added free services to its DaVinci Color Studio, www.davinciroofscapes.com/color-studio.php. The services include an interactive advice component with a national color expert and downloadable 30-page color guide.

IRE seeks volunteers

The 2012 International Roofing Expo® (IRE) is seeking volunteers for Community Service Day, a home renovation and revitalization project being held Feb. 21, 2012, in Orlando, Fla. IRE, NRCA's Disaster Relief Committee and Rebuilding Together® Central Florida have partnered to host the event. Sika Sarnafil, Canton, Mass., is Community Service Day's sponsor.

Skilled volunteers from various construction disciplines are needed to help with renovations, including roofing, painting, flooring and carpentry. All volunteers must be at least 18 years old and will be asked to sign a waiver of liability form.
