Jay B. Butch

  • Butch and his daughter, Sue, in Hawaii

What is your position within your company?
I am director of contractor programs for CertainTeed Corp., Valley Forge, Pa.

Why did you become involved in the roofing industry?
It was a happy accident! While searching for employment in facilities management, I responded to an employment advertisement for CertainTeed Roofing. It has been a pleasure, and I am fortunate to be part of an industry that has more decent and genuine people than many other business fields.

What was your first roofing experience?
I built an addition to my home, which included the installation of the roof system.

What are your favorite items on your desk?
My Brittany Spaniel coffee mug and the outbox!

What do you consider your most rewarding experiences?
Providing support to contractors that positively affects any aspect of their businesses and raising our daughter and having the privilege of being proud of her many achievements along the way.

What were your previous jobs?
As a child, I cut grass and shoveled snow. As a teenager, I was a painter, construction laborer, restaurant worker and carpenter’s assistant. As an adult, I was a screw machine operator in a factory. After that, I held an entry-level clerical position with a major insurance company, which led to a 19-year career.

What is your favorite vacation spot?
Hawaii

What is your biggest pet peeve?
People who are self-centered and inconsiderate

What are your best and worst habits?
My best habit is using my sense of humor to keep myself and others around me upbeat. My worst habit is smoking cigarettes.

What do you consider a waste of time?
Watching too much television and worrying about things you can’t control

If you could invite any three people (dead or alive) to dinner, whom would you invite and why?
Jim Bridger—because I have always been captivated by the adventurous life he led. And my mom and dad, who have passed away, because I miss talking with them, especially around the dinner table

What are your favorite stress relievers?
Working around the house and spending time with friends and family

What are the most challenging aspects of your job?
The biggest challenge is trying to help an unlimited number of small-business owners in a limited amount of time. The second biggest challenge is “unplugging” from the electronic workplace, which runs 24/7. Remember the old days when the workday ended around 5 p.m. and the workweek ended on Friday?

What is your roofing industry involvement?
I am a member of The Roofing Industry Alliance for Progress.

People would be surprised to know …
I used to have long hair!
