  • Frost, president of Rackley Roofing Co. Inc., Carthage, Tenn., with his wife, Sarah, and daughters, Devin (far left) and Dana.

Professional Roofing: What is the most unusual roofing project you've performed?
Frost: The Tennessee Aquarium, Chattanooga, Tenn. The roof is mainly large skylights. We roofed a series of small areas about 2 inches (51 mm) to 3 inches (76 mm) wide and more than 60 feet (18 m) in the air with tapered insulation and adhered EPDM.

Why did you become a roofing contractor?
I graduated from State Technical Institute at Memphis during a recession and tried to find a job as an estimator with a general contractor. A professor of mine, who also was an architect, helped me find a job with a waterproofing company. That eventually led to roofing.

What was your first roofing experience?
While in high school, I worked summers as a laborer for a home builder. One of my jobs was carrying shingles up a ladder. It was good work because I got in shape for football, but I thought it would be a tough thing to do every day.

What are your favorite items on your desk?
A small fan because I'm so hot-natured. Also, I like to see a stack of completed work.

What do you consider your most rewarding experiences?
Being a roofing contractor, I've been privileged to go to many nice places for conventions and incentive trips that I probably would not have seen otherwise. I also have been blessed to see my daughters, Devin and Dana, excel beyond what I ever imagined.

What was your first job?
In high school, I cooked burgers at a Minnie Pearl's Dairy Queen for $1 per hour.

What is your favorite vacation?
Going to Maui, Hawaii.

What do you consider a waste of time?
Not planning properly, which results in running out of materials or not having the correct equipment on a job.

What are your best and worst habits?
My best habit is being early or on time. My worst habit is smoking.

What is your biggest pet peeve?
Television commercials for personal-injury attorneys.

What is your favorite stress reliever?
Working on projects around the house when there isn't a deadline.

What is the most challenging aspect of your job?
Time management. When running a small business, I have to deal with employees, customers, suppliers, bankers, insurance companies and many others.

What is your roofing industry involvement?
I served two terms as president of the Tennessee Association of Roofing Contractors and two three-year terms on NRCA's board of directors. I also have served on NRCA's Affiliate Relations Committee, Safety Manual Committee and Quality Management Task Force, among others.

People would be surprised to know ...
I danced in the halftime show at a college football game!
