CentiMark donates to charity

CentiMark Corp., Canonsburg, Pa., has presented a check for $1 million to the Salvation Army to help with Florida hurricane relief efforts. The company's Florida offices and crews throughout the United States also helped with roof system repair, temporary roofs and roof system replacement after the hurricanes.

"The hurricanes devastated many communities, and our roofing crews went to Florida and worked tirelessly to help," says Edward B. Dunlap, chairman and chief executive officer of CentiMark. "We feel responsible to give back to those communities where disaster struck, and this $1 million donation to the Salvation Army is our way of helping."

CertainTeed expands facility

CertainTeed Corp., Valley Forge, Pa., has announced plans to expand its roofing manufacturing facility in Oxford, N.C. The expansion will include a laminated shingle line to manufacture CertainTeed's Landmark Series laminated shingles.

The Oxford plant, which currently has more than 200 employees, is expected to create up to 55 new jobs and ship shingles by early 2007. Construction is set to begin immediately with demolition of part of the existing plant and the addition of a 65,000-square-foot (6039-m²) building.

In addition, a CertainTeed roofing plant in Birmingham, Ala., has surpassed 1 million hours of operation without a lost-time accident. A lost-time accident is described as any workplace injury that prevents a worker from coming to work for his scheduled shift. Seven CertainTeed plants have reached the million-hour milestone and been inducted into CertainTeed's Millionaires' Club.

The Garland Co. receives honor

Cleveland-based The Garland Co. Inc. has received the NorthCoast 99 award for the fifth consecutive year from the Employment Resource Council, Northeast Ohio's largest employers association. The award recognizes the best places to work in northeast Ohio. The judging criteria include health and safety, compensation and benefits, training and education, diversity and community service.

Carlisle SynTec Inc. has appointed Wayne Bushey director of materials management; Jerry Ingle plant manager of its thermoplastic roofing facility in Senatobia, Miss.; and David Ulery plant manager of its new thermoplastic roofing facility in Tooele, Utah.

CETCO Building Materials Group has named Brad Miller southwestern regional sales manager; Mark Monroe northwestern regional sales manager; David Slough southeastern regional sales manager; and Todd Whitfield central regional sales manager for the StrongSeal Roofing Materials product line.

NERCA offers scholarships

The North East Roofing Educational Foundation has announced a call for scholarship applications. Seven $1,500 scholarships will be awarded to employees, immediate family members of employees or immediate family of members of the North/East Roofing Contractors Association (NERCA) who plan to pursue postsecondary educations.

Chicago group gives award

The Chicago Roofing Contractors Association (CRCA) has presented Chris Industries Inc., Northbrook, Ill., with the 2004 Supplier of the Year award. CRCA contractor members give this award to companies who show professionalism, integrity and service to the industry.

Chris Industries began by supplying copper architectural sheet-metal products and grew to offer aluminum, galvanized, Kynar®-coated material and stainless-steel specialty products.

Papers needed for symposium

There is a call for papers for a Symposium on Heat-Air-Moisture Transport: Measurements on Building Materials. Sponsored by ASTM Committee C16 on Thermal Insulation, the symposium will be held April 23, 2006, during Committee C16's standards development meetings.

Papers addressing the following topics will be considered: the need to develop new standards or review existing standards; current research activities on the heat-air-moisture transport measurement for building materials; and standard development activities at national and international levels. Those interested must submit an online Abstract Submittal Form at www.astm.org/SYMPOSIA with an attached preliminary abstract by March 15. The 250- to 300-word abstract should include a definition of the objective and approach of the work, as well as cite new material and present details with regard to results. Final abstracts will be distributed in a booklet at the symposium.

Call for safety award applications

The National Safety Council's (NSC's) Robert W. Campbell Award Program Committee invites organizations to participate in the 2005 Robert W. Campbell Award, an international award for business excellence in safety, health and environmental management.

Managed by NSC, the award committee seeks organizations that provide successful business models for excelling in safety, health and environmental performance, and business performance. Applicants' case studies must demonstrate how measurable achievements in safety, health and environmental performance are connected to productivity, profitability and other measures of business performance. Companies compete within size categories—Category I if the organization has more than 1,000 employees and Category II if the organization has fewer than 1,000 employees.

Optional letters of intent are due Feb. 28, and final applications must be postmarked by April 30.
