Johns Manville makes donation

The Rockdale, Ill.-based plant of Johns Manville Roofing Systems Group, Denver, has donated roofing materials to YMCA facilities in Joliet, Ill. Valued at about $50,000, the donation included a Johns Manville APP-modified bitumen fiberglass base sheet, APP 4.5 mineral black-modified bitumen cap sheet and 1 1/2-inch- (38-mm-) thick Fesco® Board insulation. The materials were used to reroof a new gymnasium at the Smith Family YMCA and repair a low-slope roof system at the Galowich Family YMCA, which had leaking roof systems that needed to be repaired.

"Both YMCAs were in great need of repairs," say Tami Sender, chief executive officer of YMCA. "Thanks to the donation of roofing materials from Johns Manville, the cost of these repairs greatly was reduced."

"We are delighted to help a worthwhile cause such as the YMCA," says Chris Pelzman, production supervisor at the Rockdale plant. "The YMCA does a great deal for the community and provides resources to the children of our employees. We were pleased to be able to help them."

CertainTeed receives safety award

Valley Forge, Pa.-based CertainTeed Corp.'s roofing manufacturing facility in Oxford, N.C., has been awarded the Compagnie de Saint-Gobain Diamond Safety Award. The facility is one of 25 sites worldwide to receive the award. Saint-Gobain, Paris, is CertainTeed's parent company.

Established in 1990, the Diamond Award is Saint-Gobain's highest environmental, health and safety honor and part of its commitment to social responsibility and welfare of employees. CertainTeed has received the award nine times, and the Oxford facility has won the award three times.

"On behalf of everyone at CertainTeed, I congratulate and thank all of our associates at the Oxford plant for their exceptional leadership and unwavering dedication to strong safety standards," says John Donaldson, president of CertainTeed Roofing Products Group. "It is a rare honor to receive the Diamond Award, and we are proud of our Oxford team for continuing to raise the bar in safety performance."

In addition, CertainTeed's roofing manufacturing plant in Ennis, Texas, has joined the Saint-Gobain Millionaires' Club by logging more than 1 million hours of operation without a lost-time accident. A lost-time accident is an accident that prevents an employee from returning to work for his next scheduled shift.

Part of a worldwide safety initiative, the Millionaires' Club program was developed in 2004 to encourage facilities to promote safety and recognize plants that achieve zero lost-time injuries. Plant employees at CertainTeed's facility have taken various steps to reach this goal, including attending a monthly safety meeting and training; developing an active safety committee; participating in annual safety reviews; and promoting safety discussions as part of weekly crew meetings.
