Future Executives Institute teaches leadership skills

NRCA's Future Executives Institute (FEI), a three-year educational program designed to develop the management and leadership skills of future and current leaders of roofing companies, will begin its next program Oct. 22-25 in Chicago at Northwestern University's Kellogg School of Management. The program will examine management theory and practice and offer broader views of companies as they exist in the business world.

The FEI program will provide basic business information, current industry topics, leadership and personal-development opportunities, and team-building exercises. Courses will be taught by Northwestern University professors, industry leaders and field experts, and class size is limited to 30 roofing professionals to facilitate in-depth conversations and class relationships during the three-year program. Topics addressed during the first-year program will be expanded upon in years two and three.

Standard registration fees (after June 1) for the program are $4,575 for NRCA members and $6,400 for nonmembers, which covers books, some meals, additional class activities and three nights' lodging fees at the Fitzpatrick Chicago Hotel in addition to a special meeting during the International Roofing Expo. Advance registration fees (by June 1) are $4,275 for NRCA members and $5,975 for nonmembers. If you prepay for all three years by June 1, registration fees are $12,075 for NRCA members and $17,175 for nonmembers.

NRLRC offers state licensing information

The National Roofing Legal Resource Center (NRLRC) is offering detailed state licensing requirements, regulations, procedures and specific roofing licensing requirements for contractors who wish to perform out-of-state roofing work.

Each state packet provides state regulations about registration; tax and bonding requirements applicable to an out-of-state contracting business that wants to work in another state; and licensing requirements. In many states, there are no licensing requirements applicable to roofing contractors but there are requirements applicable to out-of-state companies who want to do business in a certain state. Nonmembers of NRLRC can access state packets, as well, for $20 per state.

NRLRC was established by NRCA in 1979 as a separately funded organization and is open to roofing, roof deck and waterproofing contractors. NRLRC acts as a legal advocate, providing its members with assistance in resolving legal issues with regard to contract language, employee relations, regulatory compliance, payment provisions, insurance coverage, and codes and standards, among other issues.

NRLRC members receive access to free, expert legal assistance through NRLRC's general counsel; a legal database with more than 225 legal publications about roofing-related legal topics; NRLRC's monthly e-newsletter, The Center, which provides legal stories and updates about legal cases; the OSHA Citation Defense Manual and annual updates; and NRCA's new legal primer, Employment Law: A Legal Guide for Roofing Contractors, among other things.

NRCA announces new officers

NRCA announced its 2006-07 slate of officers during its 119th Annual Convention in Las Vegas Feb 13-16. The following were named to NRCA's Executive Committee and will begin one-year terms June 1.

Mark Gaulin, president of MAGCO Inc., a Tecta America company, Jessup, Md., was named NRCA president. Gaulin served as NRCA's senior vice president from 2005-06 and vice president from 1998-2000 and 2003-05. He also was a director from 1993-96, 1997-98 and 2000-03. Gaulin has served as chairman for several NRCA committees, such as the Architectural Sheet Metal Committee, Internet/Electronic Communications Committee and NRCA Retirement Committee. He has been involved with many other committees and task forces, as well.

Robert P. Daly Jr., president of Kaw Roofing & Sheet Metal, Kansas City, Kan., was named NRCA senior vice president. Daly served as NRCA's vice president from 2000-02 and 2003-04 and director from 1996-99 and 2002-06. He has served as chairman of the Energy Conservation & Environmental Issues Task Force and National Roofing Service Corp. and vice president liaison for the Technical Liaison Group and Waterproofing Task Force.

In addition, the following vice presidents were named and will serve two-year terms: Bruce McCrory, owner/secretary/treasurer of Kiker Corp., Mobile, Ala.; Robert McNamara, president of F.J.A. Christiansen Roofing Co. Inc., Milwaukee; and Robert W. Therrien Jr., president of The Melanson Co. Inc., Keene, N.H.

ROOFPAC events were successful

ROOFPAC, NRCA's political action committee, raised about $175,000 for NRCA's political program during NRCA's 119th Annual Convention. About $100,000 will be used to support pro-business candidates for Congress.

ROOFPAC held a number of fund-raising events during the convention, including golf, tennis and sporting clays tournaments, which had about 200 participants, as well as an auction, sponsored by GAF Materials Corp., Wayne, N.J. The auction included the Ribble Challenge, sponsored by Owens Corning, Toledo, Ohio, during which NRCA President Reid Ribble took on challengers at ping-pong. The Ribble Challenge raised about $2,500, and the high bid during the auction was $8,000 for a Firestone Indy 500 Race Weekend package.

Also, ROOFPAC's major donor program, the Political Insiders Council (PICS), added several new members who committed to contribute $5,000 annually. PICS offers benefits such as a VIP tour of the White House, among other benefits, to recognize members who contribute $5,000 in personal funds to ROOFPAC each year.

The "Overview of Low-slope Roofing (English and Spanish versions)" worker training DVD contains four programs, including "Overview of Low-slope Roofing" in English and Spanish. The program reviews different types of roofing work, roof decks, vapor retarders and insulation and describes how a typical roofing company operates. The DVD also includes English and Spanish versions of the "Administrators and Trainers Program," which provides an overview about how NRCA's Roof Application Training Program modules are structured.

The "Overview of Steep-slope Roofing (English and Spanish versions)" worker training DVD contains four programs, including "Overview of Steep-slope Roofing" in English and Spanish. The program details a roofing contractor's operations; installation issues and challenges; and assembly of and coverings for steep-slope roof systems. The DVD also includes English and Spanish versions of the "Administrators and Trainers Program."

The "Introduction to Safety (English and Spanish versions)" worker training DVD contains four programs, including "Introduction to Safety" in English and Spanish. The program details personal protective equipment, fall protection, and material and equipment handling, as well as common safety concerns, such as fire safety and burns from hot bitumen. The DVD also includes English and Spanish versions of the "Administrators and Trainers Program."
