Built nearly a century ago in 1913, the Gallatin House is located in northern California's
Lassen National Forest on the southern shore of Eagle Lake. The structure originally
was the family summer home of the prominent Gallatin family for 31 years. In 1946,
it was acquired by the U.S. Forest Service and used for administrative purposes
until 1988 when the site's management was transferred to Ronald McDonald® House
Charities. Ronald McDonald created Camp Ronald McDonald at Eagle Lake, and currently
the building serves as a summer camp headquarters for chronically ill children.
After an overabundance of exposure to extreme moisture from snow and rain, the Gallatin
House's 20-year-old roof system urgently needed to be replaced. HistoriCorps,™ Denver,
a national initiative engaging volunteers in historic preservation projects, was
selected to supervise and execute the roof system replacement. To maintain historical
accuracy, cedar shingles were specified. A plywood deck, Grace Ice & Water Shield,®
and Benjamin Obdyke's Cedar Breather® underlayment also were specified to meet California
fire requirements.
Work on the project was divided into two sessions with construction teams of eight
to 10 volunteers each. The first team began work in May 2012, and the second team
completed the project in June 2012. With the new roof system, Gallatin House will
continue to serve as a safe headquarters for the children at Camp Ronald McDonald
at Eagle Lake.
