President Bush's immigration bill failed to get the votes it needed in the Senate on Thursday, June 28. According to
www.cnn.com
, the vote was 46 to 53—14 votes short from the 60 needed to end debate.
The legislation would have employed tough border security, as well as a way to offer citizenship to some of the 12 million illegal immigrants currently in the U.S.
With the 2008 presidential elections looming, it is said any action regarding immigration likely will be put on hold until 2009.
