Small-business bankruptcies among the 15 U.S. metropolitan areas with the highest amount of bankruptcies dropped 4.4 percent in the third quarter compared with one year ago, according to
The Wall Street Journal
.
Among those 15 areas, 11 had fewer small-business bankruptcies compared with a year earlier. The areas that improved most significantly were the Atlanta area with a 27 percent drop and Chicago area with a 17 percent drop.
Southern California did not fare as well. Small-business bankruptcies in the Los Angeles area increased 4.6 percent from a year earlier, and there was a 10 percent increase in the region that includes Riverside, Calif.; San Bernadino, Calif.; and Ontario, Calif.
Third-quarter bankruptcies for small businesses in the 15 metro areas was 6,567, which makes the year's total through September 19,884. That is a 1.2 percent decline compared with the same period in 2009.
