Unemployment fell in most U.S. cities in July

Jobless rates dropped in a majority of U.S. cities in July despite an economy that has been producing few jobs, according to USA Today.

Unemployment rates fell in 193 large metro areas in July compared with 20 large metro areas in June. They increased in 118 cities and were unchanged in 61 cities.

The biggest jobless rate increase was in Yuma, Ariz., where the unemployment rate rose from 27 percent in June to 30 percent in July.

The biggest jobless rate decrease was in Morgantown, W.Va., where the unemployment rate dropped from 6.6 percent in June to 5 percent in July as West Virginia University experienced increased hiring.

Twelve cities reported unemployment rates higher than 15 percent; 11 of those cities were in California. Eight of the 10 metro areas with jobless rates less than 5 percent were in the upper Midwest. El Centro, Calif., had the highest rate in the U.S. at 30.8 percent. Bismarck, N.D., had the lowest rate at 3 percent.
