The U.S. unemployment rate remained at 9.1 percent for the third consecutive month in September as employers added 103,000 jobs, according to The Washington Post.

A significant portion of the gains were a result of the rehiring of 45,000 Verizon workers.

Employers added an average of 72,000 jobs per month during the past five months. The economy needs to consistently create about twice as many jobs just to keep up with population growth.

In September, the health care sector added 44,000 jobs and the construction sector added 26,000 jobs. The government sector cut 34,000 jobs, and the manufacturing, leisure and hospitality, and financial activities sectors basically were unchanged.
