Record snow in Alaska city damages roofs

Although much of the U.S. has experienced an unusually warm winter, Anchorage, Alaska, recently shattered its annual snowfall record and faces floods, potholes and roof damage, according to The Wall Street Journal.

Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport has recorded 134 1/2 inches of snow so far this season compared with a typical average of 71.6 inches. The accumulated snow has caused more than a dozen roofs to collapse, and many others are leaking after being damaged by the snow.

City officials believe it could take another month for snow to melt or be hauled away. Some snow piles could remain until next winter.

Although more snow is possible in Anchorage through May, officials believe any new snow won't last long because the days are getting warmer and longer.
