In April, jobless rates decreased in 37 U.S. states, indicating that modest economic growth is boosting hiring in much of the U.S., according to

Unemployment rose in five states and was unchanged in eight.
Additionally, many states have unemployment rates that have fallen well below the national average of 8.1 percent; the unemployment rate was lower than 7 percent in 22 states in April compared with only 13 states in April 2011.
Nevada had the highest unemployment rate in April at 11.7 percent, followed by Rhode Island at 11.2 percent and California at 10.9 percent. North Dakota had the lowest unemployment rate at 3 percent, followed by Nebraska at 3.9 percent and South Dakota at 4.3 percent.
