NRCA member D.C. Taylor Co., Cedar Rapids, Iowa, installed a roof system on this $825,000 project, part of Oracle Corp.'s campus in Redwood Shores, Calif.
The original ballasted EPDM roof system on this 12-story building was losing pavers as a result of high winds. Because of safety issues and costs associated with replacing an EPDM roof system, the client needed a long-term solution.
During a six-week period, D.C. Taylor replaced the EPDM roof system with a fully adhered and ballasted roof system with interlocking pavers. Lightweight insulating concrete was poured to enhance drainage of the roof's surface, and a 60-mil, felt-backed G-410 Sarnafil membrane was fully adhered to the concrete deck. The membrane system was then covered with a protection layer of Sarnafil's G-445 membrane, which, in turn, was covered with a drainage panel before the interlocking paver system was installed.
The structure essentially is a glass curtain wall; therefore, a crane was necessary for the project. Because the crane had to be located directly in front of the main entrance, disruption of business was a concern. Additionally, roofing work was being performed directly over the chief executive officer's (CEO's) office, which held several pieces of priceless artwork.
Because of the structure's height and the winds associated with tall buildings, safety for the D.C. Taylor crew was of utmost concern. Preventing falling debris and guarding safety at ground level also were important.
To overcome these challenges, D.C. Taylor Co. installed a fall-protection system for the safety of the crew—all roofing workers were tied off 100 percent of the time. Crews were scheduled to work weekends rather than weekdays to ensure safety at ground level and avoid disruption of business. And D.C. Taylor took extra precautions to protect the CEO's valuable artwork from possible roof leaks; after completion of the membrane and flashing work, the roof was inspected three separate times (by the D.C. Taylor project manager, design consultant and Sarnafil representative) before the 48-hour water test.
