NRLRC releases guide to construction contracts

The National Roofing Legal Resource Center (NRLRC) has released A Roofing Contractors Guide to Construction Contracts, which explains how to identify and understand contracts' critical clauses, providing roofing contractors with more effective ways to manage risk and reduce claims. The guide also discusses the rules of contract interpretation, payment terms and scheduling costs, as well as dispute resolution, mediation and arbitration versus litigation if roofing contractors become involved with contract disputes.

Additionally, NRLRC has released A Comprehensive Guide to Wage and Hour Regulations Affecting Roofing Contractors, which addresses regulations governing minimum wage and overtime pay requirements, including a discussion about how to calculate the "regular rate" of pay. The guide also discusses Fair Labor Standards Act regulations addressing the rules for travel time pay.

The Alliance announces a call for MVP award entries

The Roofing Industry Alliance for Progress has announced a call for entries for its Most Valuable Player (MVP) Awards Program. The deadline for entries is Nov. 2.

MVP awards formally recognize outstanding roofing workers who achieve work-related and personal goals to which others aspire. Any roofing field worker (up to and including superintendent) employed by an NRCA member or nonmember contractor can be nominated based on significant contributions in five categories: outstanding on-the-job performance, safety performance, contributions to a team effort, community service and volunteerism, and other noteworthy contributions and activities. Each category is judged separately, and individuals can be nominated for more than one category.

The awards program will recognize up to 10 roofing workers. MVP award winners will receive two complimentary airfares and two nights' hotel accommodations during NRCA's 123rd Annual Convention, Feb. 20-24, 2010, in New Orleans. Each winner also will receive one complimentary conference registration and exhibit hall pass to the 2010 International Roofing Expo,® two complimentary tickets to the NRCA Cocktail and Awards Reception and a $100 American Express Gift Certificate.

One MVP award winner will be chosen as Professional Roofing's Best of the Best. Co-sponsored by Professional Roofing and OMG Inc., Agawam, Mass., the recognition includes a special prize and feature article in Professional Roofing Workers.

All MVP award winners will be recognized in Professional Roofing, NRCA's For Members Only newsletter and at www.roofingindustryalliance.net. Winners also will be the focus of press releases sent to local and national media and industry trade press.

Judging will be conducted by a panel of roofing industry representatives, including manufacturers, contractors and other industry members.
