Jobless claims fall by 2,000

The U.S. Department of Labor reports that the number of workers filing new claims for unemployment benefits fell 2,000 in the week ending Aug. 18, dropping from the previous week's 324,000 to 322,000. Economists had expected the number to drop to 320,000.

Meanwhile, the number of people collecting unemployment benefits rose to its highest level since mid-April. There were 2.57 million continued claims during the week ending Aug. 11; 2.56 million had been expected.

The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs was 255,116 in the week ending Aug. 18, which was a decrease of 11,563 from the previous week. During the comparable week in 2006, there were 252,357 initial claims.
