Health insurance statistics

The National Federation of Independent Business offers 2012 statistics on its website regarding health insurance for small businesses in the U.S.

Following are some health insurance facts:

  • About 175 million people under age 65 are enrolled in a private health insurance plan.
  • About 156 million people under age 65 are enrolled in an employer-sponsored health insurance plan.
  • About 19 million people under age 65 are enrolled in a private health insurance plan purchased in the individual market.
  • Thirty-seven percent of small employers with fewer than 25 employees offer health insurance.
  • Thirty-nine percent of small firms with fewer than 50 employees offer health insurance.
  • Sixty-one percent of small firms with fewer than 50 employees do not offer health insurance.
  • For small employers not offering health insurance, cost is a significant reason for 65 percent of them.
  • Since 2001, the average annual family premium for covered employees in small firms increased 103 percent.
  • About 2.3 million businesses only offer fully insured health plans to their employees.
  • About 1.8 million small businesses with fewer than 100 employees only offer fully insured health plans to their employees.
  • About 12 million employees who work for small businesses with fewer than 100 employees are enrolled in a fully funded employer-sponsored health insurance plan.
  • About 24 million employees are enrolled in a fully funded employer-sponsored health insurance plan.
  • About 8 million people who are self-employed or work for a business with fewer than 100 employees are enrolled in a health insurance plan purchased in the individual market.
