Owens Corning conducts seminars

Toledo, Ohio-based Owens Corning recently conducted Preferred Contractor Business Series seminars in eight cities for its Owens Corning Preferred Contractors. The seminars addressed ways to create a marketing plan, develop leads, make good sales and other topics.

Owens Corning intends to continue its series next year with nationwide seminars about operations, including information about attracting and retaining labor and staying within budget.

Copper Sales opens new facility

Copper Sales Inc., Anoka, Minn., has opened a 50,000-square-foot (4645-m²) production and service facility in Fairless Hills, Pa. The facility will produce and stock the company’s painted steel and aluminum; anodized aluminum; mill-finished aluminum; galvanized, galvalume stainless steel; and copper.

CertainTeed to hold open houses

CertainTeed Corp., Valley Forge, Pa., will hold open houses at its Chester, Pa.-based production plant May 30 and June 1 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The open houses will feature plant and laboratory tours, Flintlastic® Modified Bitumen application demonstrations, and propane-handling and torch-safety talks led by a certified safety instructor from the Midwest Roofing Contractors Association. In addition, NASCAR driver Ward Burton will appear at the May 30 event, and drawings for CertainTeed jackets will occur during the June 1 event.

GAF receives excellence award

Wayne, N.J.-based GAF Materials Corp. has received the 2001 Circle of Excellence Award from housing manufacturer Fleetwood Homes, Riverside, Calif. The annual award is given to a Fleetwood Homes supplier who demonstrates outstanding delivery and quality of products while keeping Fleetwood Homes informed about new products and other information during the year.

In other news, GAF is holding its Timberline® Warranty Up-Grade Promotion until Aug. 31. The promotion grants points to roof system installers, GAF Certified Contractors and GAF Authorized Home Builders who purchase Timberline shingles and sell GAF roof system warranties. The points can be redeemed for prizes, such as Timberline hats, shirts, jackets and vacation packages.

In addition, the company has partnered with New York-based Construction Computing Systems Inc. to offer CompuTool Management System Software to GAF Certified Contractors at preferred rates and terms. The software is designed to manage a project and measure and track advertising costs, closing ratios, production and other details.

INSPEC receives engineering award

Minneapolis-based INSPEC Inc. received a 2001-02 Honor Award during the Engineering Excellence Awards held by the Consulting Engineers Council of Minnesota.

INSPEC earned the award for its work on the University of Minnesota at Minneapolis’ Northrop Plaza restoration project. The plaza is part of a pedestrian mall on the university’s campus. The company upgraded the plaza’s waterproofing, improved subsurface drainage, restored damaged stonework and completed other tasks.

The annual award recognizes engineering achievements that demonstrate merit and ingenuity. INSPEC was judged on uniqueness and originality; technical value; social and economic considerations; complexity; and meeting the property owner’s needs, including time and budget constraints.
