What is your position within your company?
I am a "future owner in training" for Dryspace Inc., Cedar Rapids, Iowa. I will own the company in about three years.

What is the most unusual roofing project of which you have been a part?
My company worked on a reroofing project at a biology building at the University of Iowa, Iowa City. We had to raise an existing glass panel greenhouse over the roof's block wall to reach the roof area. Out of 300-plus glass panels, we only broke two during the project.

Why did you become involved in the roofing industry?
My dad is a general contractor, so I grew up knowing the construction industry. I've always had a passion for working outside. I took a job with Dryspace during a short break after my first year of college, and here I am 21 years later.

What was your first roofing experience?
Helping my dad during the summer when I was 10 years old

What is your roofing industry involvement?
I am on the Iowa Roofing Contractors Association's board of directors, and I am a graduate of NRCA University's Future Executives Institute—Class 7.

What song are you listening to over and over?
ESPN radio

What was your first job?
I was a car dealership lot attendant.

People would be surprised to know …
I was born on July 7, 1977, and I don't think the number 7 has ever brought me any luck.

What qualities do you most admire in a person?
Honesty and integrity

If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go? Why?
I would love to take my wife on vacation somewhere exotic. We never got to go on a honeymoon because I started framing our new house the day after our wedding.

What's the most exciting/adventurous thing you've done?
Walking on the glass skywalk over the Grand Canyon is pretty crazy.

What do you consider a waste of time?
Submittals

What is your favorite stress reliever?
Weight training and other forms of physical fitness

When you were a child, what did you want to be when you grew up?
A professional baseball player

What is your favorite food?
It's difficult to beat a sausage and mushroom Tombstone® pizza.

The amazing opportunities the industry has provided for my family and myself and the lifelong friends I have made.

What's your favorite roofing material to work with? Why?
60-mil-thick EPDM—I've used it for 15 years, and it works.

Big city or small town?
I definitely am "small town." I was born and raised in Troy Mills, Iowa, which has a population of about 300 people.

What do you consider your most rewarding experience?
I am enjoying watching my kids grow up to be successful, well-rounded individuals.
