Since my report in November 2017, NRCA's activities have continued at quite a pace. CEO Reid Ribble, Chairman of the Board-Elect Kent Schwickert and I have met to promote the One Voice initiative with senior management of GAF, Soprema and Atlas. All three subsequently joined NRCA as full members. The One Voice message continues to be met with enthusiasm.
Sue and I attended the Chicago Roofing Contractors Association's (CRCA's) awards banquet in Chicago in December 2017. I returned to Chicago for NRCA's Budget and Finance Committee meeting in January and later that week for the CRCA convention and trade show in Oak Brook, Ill. I attended my first CRCA convention 21 years ago (and it is still cold in Chicago in January).
I attended the Midwest Roofing Contractors Association's (MRCA's) winter meeting in Tucson, Ariz., and addressed the MRCA board to encourage its participation in NRCA's Roofing Day in D.C. 2018. MRCA agreed to be a sponsor for the event.
In February, the International Roofing Expo® (IRE) was held in New Orleans, and NRCA senior leadership met with our Canadian, Japanese, Chinese and German counterparts. The expo was quite successful, breaking all past records for floor space sold. We had 10,076 attendees and representatives from 62 countries. In general terms, optimism was high.
At the IRE, NRCA conducted its board of directors meeting and Executive Committee meeting where, among other things, we approved the Strategic Plan. The plan will be available online soon.
After a week back home, the NRCA delegation then traveled to Cologne, Germany, to attend the Dach + Holz (Roof + Timber) exhibition in late February. Our German hosts were gracious, and the show was impressive. While in Germany, our friends at ROCKWOOL, North America, arranged for us to tour their plant in Margraten, the Netherlands. We also toured an American military cemetery in the Netherlands where 8,300 American soldiers who fought in World War II are buried. That experience was sobering.
Finally, I headed back to the U.S. to get ready for Roofing Day in D.C. March 6-7, where a broad range of stakeholders from all segments of the industry will come together to advocate for the roofing industry with policymakers in our nation's capital.
