On July 27, following a meeting in the Oval Office with congressional leaders, President Obama urged lawmakers to move forward regarding a series of Democratic initiatives before they leave next week for summer break, according to
The Washington Post
. The initiatives include legislation to aid small businesses by helping community banks offer loans.
Obama said his meeting with congressional leaders was "productive" but accused Republicans of blocking legislation for political gain.
"We shouldn't let America's small businesses be held hostage to partisan politics," he said.
Sen. Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) says Obama and Democrats are to blame for delaying action regarding small-business initiatives because they have been focusing on other Democratic initiatives, such as the Wall Street bill, spending bill and campaign finance bill.
Obama also urged House lawmakers to pass new funding for the war in Afghanistan and said the Senate should pass a pared-down energy bill to respond to the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico.
