The Republican-led House voted Jan. 19 to repeal the health care overhaul that was signed into law in March 2010. Three Democrats sided with the GOP in the 245-189 vote.
However, a similar vote is not expected in the Democrat-led Senate. Although Republicans say they will continue to push for the repeal, in the meantime, they want to try to change the law by eliminating certain parts and replacing others. For example, they would eliminate a requirement that nearly all Americans obtain health insurance, as well as remove a tax on businesses.
Democrats say they are willing to revisit parts of the law but are skeptical the GOP would devise a better plan. Republicans support certain aspects of the law, such as a provision allowing young adults to stay on their parents' insurance policies until they turn 26 and a provision that has created temporary subsidies for special insurance for individuals with ailments that have led insurance companies to deny them coverage.
However, Republicans still support ideas many Democrats oppose, such as placing federal limits on damages in medical malpractice lawsuits and giving Americans tax credits to help them pay for insurance.
