Jobless rates increased in more than 90 percent of U.S. cities in June, according to USA Today.
Unemployment rates climbed in 345 large metro areas in June compared with 210 large metro areas in May. They dropped in 20 cities and were unchanged in seven cities.
The biggest jobless rate increase was in Joplin, Mo., which was hit by a tornado May 22. The city lost 9,400 jobs in June, and its unemployment rate jumped nearly 2 percentage points to 9.6 percent.
Because of the summer break, college towns experienced higher jobless rates. Champaign-Urbana, Ill., home to the University of Illinois, had the second-largest increase with its unemployment rate jumping from 6.9 percent in May to 8.6 percent in June.
Twelve cities reported unemployment rates higher than 15 percent. El Centro, Calif., had the highest rate in the U.S. at 28.5 percent. Bismarck, N.D., had the lowest rate at 3.6 percent.
