Kevin Filotto

What is your position within your company?
I am a project manager for Filotto Roofing, Crest Hill, Ill.

What is the most unusual roofing project of which you have been a part?
In 2019, we completed a reroofing project on Ryan’s Round Barn, Kewanee, Ill. The Illinois Department of Natural Resources wanted to preserve the original look of the historical barn, which was built in 1910. We laid plywood over the existing wood shakes and installed a vapor retarder and asphalt shingles. Every piece of plywood, sheet metal and shingle had to be mitered to fit the round roof profile.

Why did you become involved in the roofing industry?
I wanted to get involved in the family business, and I was hooked after my first summer on the job. I enjoy the hands-on work. For me, seeing a project completed from start to finish is rewarding.

What was your first roofing experience?
My first roofing experience was a chapel project at Lewis University, Romeoville, Ill., during my senior year of high school. It felt like the hottest day of the year and definitely was a hard day’s work, but I enjoyed the comradery of all the guys on our crew.

What is your roofing industry involvement?
I am currently in my third year of NRCA University’s Future Executives Institute—Class 9.

What quality do you most admire in a person?
I admire people who are good listeners and humble. I believe there is something to learn from every person I encounter.

If you could have any superpower, what would it be? Why?
I’d want the ability to teleport mainly to save time. I’d have endless possibilities of what I could do in a day.

What is your favorite stress reliever?
Playing golf. After a long day of work, it’s great to get out and not worry about anything except an upcoming golf shot.

What’s the most exciting/adventurous thing you’ve done?
In 2019, my wife and I honeymooned in Europe for three weeks. We can’t wait to go back and explore more countries.

When you were a child, what did you want to be when you grew up?
A professional baseball player

My favorite part about working in the roofing industry is ...
The challenge of every project being different in some way. There always is something to learn from any size roofing project we complete.

What’s your favorite roofing material to work with? Why?
Slate. We’ve been working with synthetic slate products lately, but I always have loved the look of dark natural slate with copper accents.

People would be surprised to know ...
I grew up on a farm.

What is the most high-tech item in your house?
My wife and I have our lights, alarm system and Google Nest hooked up to our Google Assistant so we can control them from anywhere.

Big city or small town?
Small town just outside of a big city. My plan is to buy land and build a house in the country. I want my future kids to grow up the same way I did.
