How can you reap the benefits of a multigenerational team?

The workforce currently includes members of five generations, and for managers, that presents opportunities and challenges, according to Harvard Business Review.

There are various ways to benefit from generational diversity:

  • Making overgeneralizations about certain generations can be harmful and foster dissent. Debunk those stereotypes and encourage mutual respect.
  • Ask your team to be open about their preferences, particularly regarding communication. Different generations may prefer certain methods, so make it clear there is no right or wrong way to interact.
  • Do not play favorites. Ensure every voice is heard and considered, regardless of someone’s age or level of seniority. Instead of perpetuating an “us vs. them” dynamic, focus on respect and understanding.
