Firestone donates scholarship money

Firestone Building Products Co., Carmel, Ind., donated $10,000 to the Roof Consultants Institute (RCI) Foundation during RCI's 17th International Convention and Trade Show. According to William Myers, RCI's director of marketing communications, the donation will help RCI's foundation support education and research in the roofing industry.

In addition, the company donated $5,000 to the Davis Memorial Foundation of the Western States Roofing Contractors Association (WSRCA) during WSRCA's 28th Annual Convention and Trade Show. The money will be used to provide scholarships to students and individuals who want to improve their lives.

Carlisle Syntec receives awards

Carlisle, Pa.-based Carlisle Syntec Inc. received one of eight Preferred Vendor Awards from N.B. Handy Co., Lynchburg, Va. N.B. Handy distributes Carlisle Syntec's commercial roofing products and is a company representative. Carlisle Syntec was compared with more than 30 N.B. Handy suppliers and achieved high satisfaction levels for delivery, service, pricing and quality.

In addition, Carlisle Syntec received N.B. Handy's 2001 Most Innovative Vendor Award. The annual award is given to a company that has demonstrated creativity and courage when developing new products and systems for a changing marketplace.

EcoStar™ opens manufacturing plant

Vernon Hills, Ill.-based EcoStar recently opened a 60,000-square-foot (5574-m²) manufacturing facility in Trenton, S.C. The facility produces the company's Majestic Slate Colonial™ tiles and Seneca Cedar Shake Tiles™ and stocks roof system accessories.

The plant was opened to increase the company's distribution capabilities and decrease lead time and freight costs to the East, North, Southeast and Midwest.

CertainTeed plant excels in safety

Valley Forge, Pa.-based CertainTeed Corp.'s Kansas City, Kan., plant received a Diamond Award from its parent company, Saint-Gobain, Paris, for outstanding safety records. The annual award is given to Saint-Gobain's worldwide manufacturing facilities with the lowest accident rates. CertainTeed's plant was one of four U.S. facilities recognized.

"Safety is something we take seriously day in and day out for the health and welfare of our employees," says Glenn Abraham, manager of the Kansas City plant. "It's an honor to be recognized for our efforts."

Metl-Span signs agreement

NRCA member Metl-Span, Lewisville, Texas, has entered into a distribution agreement with Zer-O-Loc Enterprises Ltd., Richmond, British Columbia, Canada. According to the agreement's terms, Zer-O-Loc Enterprises exclusively will distribute Metl-Span's polyurethane insulated foam panels throughout Canada.

Dow Chemical helps Habitat for Humanity

The Dow Chemical Co., Midland, Mich., participated with Habitat for Humanity and the Jimmy Carter Work Project in Durban, South Africa, June 3-7. Sixty Dow Chemical employees and one Dow Chemical customer participated in the project, which will be complete when 100 homes are built throughout Africa.

Dow Chemical donated $72,000 to renovate Durban's community center and build 10 homes in Durban; the projects should be completed during the next 15 months.

The company also donated STYROFOAM™ ROOFMATE™ extruded polystyrene insulation for all 100 homes being built.

In addition, Dow Chemical has committed to donating $2 million toward house sponsorships for Habitat for Humanity during the next four years and $5 million worth of STYROFOAM ROOFMATE for 25,000 North American Habitat for Humanity houses being built through 2005.

Bradco Supply buys two companies

Bradco Supply Corp., Avenel, N.J., has purchased H. Verby Co., Holtsville, N.Y., and FlexMaster, Freeport, N.Y. The acquired distributors collectively have four New York locations and will continue to operate under their respective names.

In addition, Bradco Supply acquired a 40,000-square-foot (3716-m²) warehouse in Houston and 30,000-square-foot (2787-m²) warehouse in Philadelphia. The warehouses will help the company better distribute its products in those areas.

Cleasby expands business

San Francisco-based Cleasby Manufacturing Co. Inc. has acquired the conveyor divisions of Clearfield Conveyors, Clearfield, Utah. Clearfield Conveyors' fiberglass products will continue to be manufactured at the facility under the name Cleasby Manufacturing of Utah, d/b/a Cleasby Conveyors. According to Cleasby Manufacturing representatives, no employee changes will occur.

CENTRIA is code-compliant

Pittsburgh-based CENTRIA Architectural Systems has received five-year notices of acceptance from the Miami-Dade Building Code Compliance Office for its SRS®3 Roof System and Formawall® Dimension Series® wall panels. The company also received a renewal acceptance for its StyleRib wall product. The code approves products for use in metropolitan Dade County, Fla.

Up the Ladder

INSPEC Inc. has named Dwight D. Benoy president.

Bob LeClare has been named vice president of sales and marketing for W.P. Hickman Co.

Trimline® Building Products has hired Luke Clary as Southeast region sales manager and Tim Schmucker as Northeast region sales manager.

Powers Fasteners Inc. has named Mark Ziegler director of engineering services and Alan Price and Brian Damerell Eastern regional engineer and inside sales engineer, respectively.

Beacon Roofing Supply Inc. has hired John H. Meister as president and chief operating officer.

Bob Heinrich has been named chief executive officer of the International Code Council.®

Tom Walker has been appointed national sales manager for Firestone Building Products Co.

Tim Davis has been appointed Western regional sales manager for Stevens Roofing Systems.
