NRCA elects 2003-04 directors

NRCA elected its 2003-04 board of directors during its 116th Annual Convention and Exhibit in New Orleans. Terms begin June 1.

The following were elected to three-year terms: Melinda Cutrona, manager of General Works Inc. LLC, Orange City, Fla.; Timothy Davey, president of Davey Roofing Inc., Irvine, Calif.; John Dollar, vice president of Marton Roofing Industries Ltd., Houston; Ed Gallos, president of Master Roofing Ltd., Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada; Michael Gustafson, president of Gustafson Industries Inc., Boynton Beach, Fla.; Michael Herlihy III, senior project manager for Olsson Roofing Co. Inc., Aurora, Ill.; Alex Hernandez, vice president of Clark Roofing Co., Broadview, Ill.; T. Allen Lancaster Jr., president of Metalcrafts Inc., Savannah, Ga.; Philip McKinney, president of Evans Service Co. The following directors were elected to two-year terms: William Bailey, president of Bailey Roofing Contractors Inc., Des Moines, Iowa; Ben Pickens Jr., president of Pickens Roofing & Sheet Metal Inc., Spartanburg, S.C.; and Michael Satran, president of Interstate Roofing Inc., Portland, Ore.

NRCA holds Student Day

NRCA designated Feb. 13 as Student Day during its 116th Annual Convention and Exhibit, "Succeeding Through Change," Feb. 11-14. Student Day is meant to inform students about the roofing industry and show them that working in the roofing industry can offer viable careers.

Nine students from Southwest Mississippi Community College, Summit, and Delgado Community College, New Orleans, were greeted by NRCA Vice President Robert Therrien Jr., president of Al Melanson Co. Inc., Keene, N.H. Therrien told the students about how he became involved in the roofing industry, the industry's technical aspects and benefits of being involved with NRCA. The students then asked questions pertaining to the industry before entering the trade show to browse exhibits and learn more about roofing careers.

Chicago association elects officers

The Chicago Roofing Contractors Association elected the following officers for 2003: president—James Brosseau, vice president of Bennett & Brosseau Roofing Inc., Romeoville, Ill.; first vice president—Joseph McDevitt, president of Roofs Inc., Lyons, Ill.; second vice president—Rodney Petrick, vice president of Ridgeworth Roofing Co. Inc., Bridgeview, Ill.; secretary—William Lynch, general manager and vice president of finance for Olsson Roofing Co. Inc., Aurora, Ill.; and treasurer—Christopher Adler, president of Adler Roofing & Sheet Metal Inc., Joliet, Ill.

Canadian group names new leader

The Roofing Contractors Association of British Columbia appointed Brian Hofler as its new executive vice president.

Hofler has more than 25 years' experience in the roofing and sheet-metal industries and previously was the association's education and training manager. Hofler has been involved with professional development programs for roofing workers, inspectors and other industry professionals.

Garland receives employment award

The Garland Co. Inc., Cleveland, has received a NorthCoast 99 Award from the Employment Resource Council of Northeast Ohio, Cleveland. The award is given to companies considered great places to work based on their compensation and benefits, health and safety, training and education, diversity, communication and community service activities. Garland has won the award for three consecutive years.

Sarnafil presents project awards

Canton, Mass.-based Sarnafil Inc. presented its third annual Project of the Year Award to NRCA member The Hartford Roofing Co. Inc., Glastonbury, Conn., for its work on the John F. Kennedy Library and Museum, Boston. The company was recognized for scope and complexity of work performed and outstanding workmanship and skill. The Hartford Roofing Co. received a plaque and $5,000 prize.

NRCA member A.W. Farrell & Son, Dunkirk, N.Y., won second place for its work on the Erie Intermodal Transportation Center, Erie, Pa. Third place recipients were NRCA members Knollmeyer Design & Building Corp., Woburn, Mass., for its work on the New England Produce Center, Chelsea, Mass., and Pfister Maintenance Inc., Paterson, N.J., for its work on the DIA Center for the Arts, Beacon, N.Y.

SPRI elects officers

SPRI elected its officers during its 21st annual conference held in Beach Gardens, Fla.

The following were elected to one-year terms: president—Paul Yurcich, market manager for construction at Canadian General Tower Ltd., Cambridge, Ontario, Canada; president-elect—Mike Ennis, senior development leader for The Dow Chemical Co., Reynoldsburg, Ohio; and secretary-treasurer—Steve Moskowitz, vice president of technical and warranty services for Stevens Roofing Systems, Holyoke, Mass.

In other news, NRCA member Great Lakes Roofing Corp., Germantown, Wis., was awarded SPRI's 11th annual Contractor Achievement Award. The company was recognized for workmanship, health and safety programs, installation and equipment cost-saving innovations, and marketing initiatives. To be eligible for the award, companies are required to have 50 percent of sales from flexible roof membrane installations, including modified bitumen.

Koppers manager passes away

Andrew G. NobleAndrew G. Noble, commercial roofing regional manager for Koppers Industries Inc., Pittsburgh, died Feb. 8. Noble was 54.

Noble began his roofing career 31 years ago as a Koppers Industries sales representative. During his time with the company, he worked in New Jersey; New York; Pennsylvania; Texas; and Washington, D.C. Noble was an active member of several industry organizations, including the Construction Specifications Institute; Roofing Contractors Association of Texas; Western Pennsylvania Roofing Contractors Association; and NRCA, for which he coordinated Koppers Industries' donations to the NRCA Pentagon Project.

Noble is survived by his wife, Carol; daughter, Jessica; and son, James. The family has asked memorials be sent to the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center's (UPMC's) Cancer Center, UPMC Passavant, 9100 Babcock Blvd., Pittsburgh, PA 15237 or McCandless/Franklin Park Ambulance Authority, P.O. Box 1, Ingomar, PA 15127.



Up the ladder

Malarkey Roofing Products has hired Lora Richardson as customer service manager.

Stevens Roofing Systems has made the following district sales manager appointments: Peter Beimford—Alaska, Idaho, Montana, Oregon and Washington; Bill Cipperley—Indiana, Kentucky, Ohio and western Pennsylvania; and Dale Gilman—California and Nevada.

CSI hires new executive director

The Construction Specifications Institute (CSI) has hired Karl F. Borgstrom, Ph.D., as its new executive director.

Borgstrom has more than 20 years' experience in construction and association management, as well as administration experience. Previously, Borgstrom served as executive director of the Management Education Institute of the National Electrical Contractors Association and chief executive officer of the Construction Management Association of America. Borgstrom replaces Greg Balestrero, who left CSI to become chief executive officer of the Project Management Institute.

Bosch Power Tools has redesigned its Web site, www.boschtools.com, to feature three new pages—woodworking, cordless and concrete/metal—from which users can find specific tools.
