Owens Corning introduces warranty

Toledo, Ohio-based Owens Corning's Roofing and Asphalt Division has launched its System Advantage™ Platinum Limited Lifetime Warranty available only to Owens Corning™ Roofing Platinum Preferred Contractors.

System Advantage Platinum Limited Lifetime Warranty enables contractors to offer homeowners limited lifetime workmanship warranty coverage for roof systems installed on single-family detached homes. The warranty replaces the Platinum Promise™ Limited Warranty, which covered workmanship for up to 25 years.

Tremco receives LEED® certification

Tremco Inc., Beachwood, Ohio, has received the U.S. Green Building Council's (USGBC's) LEED Gold certification for its recently renovated corporate headquarters. Changes to Tremco's headquarters were so extensive that the certification is for new construction, not renovation. The building received 72 points from USGBC.

New features on the building include four types of sustainable roof systems—vegetative; photovoltaic (PV); white reflective, built-up; and white reflective membrane—as well as sealants and gaskets and new sidewalks with decorative concrete.

The building also now features a wind turbine and carport with a PV array; a 15,000-gallon water capture and reuse system in the parking lot; numerous interior upgrades, such as an Americans with Disabilities Act-compliant elevator and restrooms; and mechanical, electrical and plumbing upgrades, including a high-efficiency HVAC system.

During the renovation, Tremco recycled, reused or burned for energy more than 2 million pounds of construction debris. No debris was sent to landfills.

Reichel & Drews acquires Reiser Technologies

Reichel & Drews Inc., Itasca, Ill., has acquired Reiser Technologies, Erbach, Germany.

Reichel & Drews customers now will be able to choose from a variety of polymer-modified bitumen membrane production systems. Reiser Technologies' operations will merge with Reichel & Drews GmbH, Bamberg, Germany.

Sika Sarnafil announces contest winners

Sika Sarnafil, Canton, Mass., has announced the winners of its 2011 Contract Project of the Year competition. Projects were judged on project complexity, design uniqueness, craftsmanship and creative problem solving. A winner and finalists in four categories—low-slope, steep-slope, waterproofing and sustainability—were recognized for outstanding workmanship while completing a project using a Sika Sarnafil thermoplastic membrane for roofing or waterproofing applications.

Greenwood Industries Inc., Millbury, Mass., won first place in the low-slope category for reroofing TD Garden, Boston. Bel-Mac Roofing Inc., Santa Rosa Beach, Fla., won first place in the steep-slope category for its work on Grand Harbor Condominium, Destin, Fla. Tecta America Zero Co. LLC, Cincinnati, won first place in the waterproofing category for its work on Northern Kentucky University's Griffin Hall, Highland Heights, Ky. And Delta Contracting Services Inc., East Brunswick, N.J., won first place in the sustainability category for its work on Vertical Screen Inc.'s world headquarters in Warminster, Pa.

CertainTeed commits to Homes for Our Troops

CertainTeed Corp., Valley Forge, Pa., has made a yearlong commitment to Homes for Our Troops, a national nonprofit organization dedicated to building specially adapted homes for severely injured veterans at no cost to the service member. CertainTeed donated roofing materials for 30 homes throughout the U.S. Each home will be outfitted with a complete CertainTeed Integrity Roof System™ composed of underlayments, shingles, accessories and ventilation.

Additionally, CertainTeed has recognized Impriano Roofing and Siding Inc., Berwyn, Pa., in its On the Road Again promotion. Impriano Roofing and Siding qualified for the contest based on its exemplary performance in 2011.

The On the Road Again contest allowed contractors nationwide who use SureStart™ Plus warranties the chance to win one of nine 2011 Harley Davidson Sportsters® or a 2012 Ford® Mustang GT. Impriano Roofing and Siding sold more than the required amount of CertainTeed SureStart Plus warranties. Jack Impriano, president of Impriano Roofing and Siding, received the Ford Mustang GT.

GAF offers payment plans

GAF, Wayne, N.J., has made available two payment plan options, which its Master Elite™ and Certified™ Contractors now can offer homeowners.

The first payment plan offers consumers no interest if paid in full within 18 months. The second option gives homeowners a reduced annual rate of 6.9 percent with custom payments. Both options are offered by GAF and Wells Fargo at no extra charge to the contractor beyond the minimum administrative fee already paid to be part of a financing program.

The program launched April 1 in select U.S. markets. To take advantage of the promotion, contractors must be enrolled in the Wells Fargo financing program. Enrollment applications are available at www.contractors.gaf.com.

Dow Global Technologies announces license agreement

Midland, Mich.-based Dow Global Technologies LLC, a subsidiary of The Dow Chemical Co., has announced a second license agreement for its Polymeric Flame Retardant (FR) technology with Bromine Compounds Ltd., Tel-Aviv, Israel, a company within the ICL Industrial Products (ICL-IP) segment. ICL-IP has been granted a license to produce and sell Polymeric FR for use in extruded and expanded polystyrene foam insulation products.

MFM Building Products hires representatives

MFM Building Products, Coshocton, Ohio, has hired North Woods Reps LLC, Lewiston/Auburn, Maine, to represent MFM Building Products in Canada.

North Woods Reps develops its two-step distribution accounts by creating demand at the contractor and dealer levels. North Woods Reps will be the primary contact for all MFM Building Products' Canadian customers.

Representation from North Woods Reps includes Bob Hagenaars, principle partner, and Courtney Hagenaars, sales representative.

NorthStar Construction installs solar panels

NorthStar Construction Services Corp., Shirley, Mass., and SouthPoint Solar, Leominster, Mass., have installed 364 photovoltaic (PV) panels on NorthStar Construction Services' 20,400-square-foot headquarters in Shirley. The company also had an energy audit conducted and installed new light bulbs and motion-sensor switches in the facility. NorthStar Construction Services also installed a high-efficiency HVAC system and now recycles all waste and operates its own fueling station to better manage fuel consumption and costs.

Each PV panel has a capacity of 255 watts. The system's estimated annual production is 103,000 kilowatt-hours, which will cover NorthStar Construction Services' annual energy use.

Roofing contractor passes away

James "Jim" Hubert Falkner Sr., president of Falkner Inc., Orlando, Fla., passed away Feb. 20 in his hometown of Winter Park, Fla. He was 78 years old.

After receiving his college degree from Georgia Tech University, Atlanta, Falkner served in the U.S. army. Falkner also was active in the roofing industry and served as president of the Florida Roofing, Sheet Metal and Air Conditioning Contractors Association and developed Florida's Certified Professional Roofing Certification Code.

Falkner is survived by his daughters, Lisa Lebofsky and Kristy Horan; son, James Jr.; grandchildren, Torin May, Tanner May, Patrick May, Kaylin Falkner and Camden Falkner; sister, Ruth Windham; brothers, Joe and David; and several nieces and nephews.

A memorial service was held Feb. 23 at Carey Hand Cox-Parker Funeral Home, Winter Park. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Heart Association, 7272 Greenville Ave., Dallas, TX 75231. Written condolences may be left at www.carey-handcox.com.

Companies partner to reroof home

National Roofing Partners, Dallas; KPostCompany, Dallas; and ABC Supply Co. Inc., Beloit, Wis., helped a family in need in Irving, Texas. The city of Irving had declared the family's home uninhabitable and threatened to condemn it if the roof system was not replaced.

Rick Jenkins, director of commercial sales for ABC Supply, agreed to donate all the materials needed to complete the project.

KPostCompany agreed to supply all required labor. Adan Casteneda, KPostCompany's sheet metal superintendent, and a team of about 15 individuals from KPostCompany's sheet metal department volunteered to replace the existing roof system Jan. 20-21.

The home had three existing roof systems that were torn off, the equivalent of 5,700 square feet. About 300 square feet of wood decking and 400 feet of wood rafters and fascia were replaced.

Chandler's Roofing completes charity project

Chandler's Roofing Inc., San Pedro, Calif., has completed its fifth roofing project for Habitat for Humanity® of Greater Los Angeles (HFH GLA).

The company partnered with GAF, Wayne, N.J., and Malarkey Roofing Products, Portland, Ore. The partnership allowed for the roof systems to be completed with donated and/or highly discounted roofing materials, saving HFH GLA thousands of dollars in material costs.

CentiMark enters agreement

CentiMark Corp., Canonsburg, Pa., and Corporate United, Cleveland, have entered into a new three-year agreement to provide Corporate United's member companies a full-service roofing and flooring program. CentiMark will provide Corporate United members with a discounted pricing model, national account representation, and group and individual volume rebates.

The agreement will provide comprehensive solutions for all roofing needs through a network of 65 CentiMark offices across Canada, Puerto Rico and the U.S., including online programs designed to allow property managers to oversee roofing portfolios; discounts of up to 10 percent off roof system safety products; do-it-yourself floor maintenance items at 10 percent discount; and flexible payment terms and long-term financing.

NTRCA announces award winners

The North Texas Roofing Contractors Association (NTRCA) announced the winners of its Golden Hammer Awards during its 12th Annual Awards Banquet and Gala held Feb. 11 in Fort Worth, Texas.

NTRCA's annual Golden Hammer Awards recognize outstanding roofing projects completed during the past year. Entries are judged for logistical challenges, quality workmanship, uniqueness, difficulty, time constraints, innovative solutions and safety challenges.

The 2012 Golden Hammer Award winners for community service projects are Bert Roofing Inc., Dallas, for its work on the National Football League Players Association Holiday House in Dallas and NRCA member KPostCompany, Dallas, for its work with Anita N. Martinez Ballet Folklorico, Dallas. TriVAN Roofing, Southlake, Texas; NRCA member Mike Huddleston Roofing, Mansfield, Texas; NRCA member Tice Enterprises, Dallas; The HR Group, Richardson, Texas; and NRCA member Frazier Roofing & Guttering, Arlington, Texas, also received Golden Hammer Awards for reroofing Dallas resident Jeanette Jordan's home.

SPRI elects president

SPRI has elected Bob LeClare, vice president of sales for W.P. Hickman Co., Arden, N.C., as the association's president for 2012-14. LeClare was elected during SPRI's 30th Annual Conference and Business Meeting held Jan. 13-15 in Fort Myers, Fla.

Additionally, Stan Choiniere, technical director of OMG Roofing Products, Agawam, Mass., is president-elect and Hal Shapiro, specifier services manager for Johns Manville Roofing Systems, Denver, is secretary/treasurer. LiveRoof® appoints regional grower

LiveRoof LLC has appointed James Greenhouses, Athens, Ga., as a new licensed regional grower and distributor for the LiveRoof Hybrid Green Roof System in Georgia.

Ken and Leah James, owners and operators of James Greenhouses, are horticulture graduates from the University of Georgia, Athens, and maintain close ties to the University of Georgia's College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences.

ARMA announces award recipients

The Asphalt Roofing Manufacturers Association (ARMA) has announced the winners of its second annual Quality Asphalt Roofing Case-study (QARC) Awards Program, the only national awards program in the U.S. that recognizes outstanding new commercial and residential asphalt-based roofing projects.

NRCA member Precise Construction, Algonquin, Ill., received the Gold award for its work on the Deerfield residence, Deerfield, Ill.; Legends Roofing, Dallas, received the Silver award for its work on the Seagoville residence, Seagoville, Texas; and NRCA member Advanced Roofing Inc., Fort Lauderdale, Fla., received the Bronze award for its work on the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta's Miami branch.

Precise Construction, Legends Roofing and Advanced Roofing received checks from ARMA in the amounts of $2,000, $1,000 and $500, respectively. Each company also will have their projects featured on the QARC website.

Kickoff to Rebuild is successful

NRCA's national charity partner, Rebuilding Together,® Washington, D.C., held its 17th annual Kickoff to Rebuild Feb. 3, two days before the National Football League's (NFL's) Super Bowl XLVI in Indianapolis.

During Kickoff to Rebuild, celebrities, NFL players and officials, sponsors and community members volunteered to help complete renovations begun in November 2011 on 10 homes in the Super Bowl Legacy Neighborhood of Near Eastside. Volunteers rehabilitated the homes, including installing a new roof system on one home. The project also included a new community playground, supplied by Carter's Kids, a foundation developed by HGTV personality Carter Oosterhouse.

GAF, Wayne, N.J., provided the materials for the projects, and Roofers Union Local 119 supplied the labor.
