Tremco receives award

Tremco Inc., Beachwood, Ohio, has received an Award for Excellence in Environmental, Health, Safety and Security Performance from the Ohio Chemistry Technology Council for its headquarters renovation.

The goal of Tremco's foundation-to-roof renovation was to make its headquarters a high-performance, energy-efficient facility that requires less water, uses renewable energy sources and reduces operating costs.

The facility received LEED® Gold Certification from the U.S. Green Building Council.

Carlisle Construction Materials to provide PVC membranes

Carlisle Construction Materials, Greenville, Ill., plans to establish a PVC roof membrane manufacturing operation on its Greenville campus. State-of-the-art manufacturing equipment will allow the company to provide a variety of sizes and types of PVC roof membrane.

The PVC membranes are expected to be available for shipment by the end of the first quarter of 2014.

GAF military program is successful

GAF, Wayne, N.J., has announced more than 1,000 military families have submitted rebates to GAF's Roofs for Troops program, which offers rebates to active military and veterans as a display of gratitude for their service to their country.

Through Roofs for Troops, active military, veterans and retirees who use a GAF factory-certified contractor can receive a $300 rebate from GAF when they purchase a new GAF Lifetime Roofing System and provide proof of purchase for GAF Lifetime Shingles and at least three qualifying GAF accessories. Additionally, GAF has won 11 American Inhouse Design Awards from Graphic Design USA magazine. The contest showcases work by in-house graphic designers and offers an opportunity for these professionals to be recognized for their creativity and contributions to their businesses and institutions.

More than 4,000 entries were submitted, and 15 percent were declared winners. GAF received awards in a variety of categories, including Sales Promotion/Sales Kits, Advertising, Posters, Packaging and Brochures & Collateral.

MetalForming receives award

MetalForming Inc., Peachtree City, Ga., and the Georgia Institute of Technology, Atlanta, have received the 2011 Celebration of Engineering and Technology Innovation (CETI) Award for their new video application. The CETI Award is given annually by Fiatech, Austin, Texas, a community of global leadership organizations focused on innovation in the capital projects industry.

MetalForming's and the Georgia Institute of Technology's application uses videogrammetry—overlaying stereo video feeds—to deliver 3-D views to MetalForming's roof panel cutting and forming machine. It enables real-time digital measurements of nearly any object with 15-mm precision.

Accurence selected as award finalist

Accurence Inc., Westminster, Colo., has announced it is a finalist for the 2012 Colorado Companies to Watch (CTW) award. CTW honors second-stage companies that demonstrate high performance in the marketplace or exhibit innovative products or processes.

This year, Colorado CTW selected 100 finalists out of more than 360 nominees. Award recipients are selected by a panel of independent judges composed of representatives of the host organization and others, as deemed appropriate by the host and the Edward Lowe Foundation, which developed the program. The award is based on growth in number of employees, impact of the business in the job market, increase in revenue and/or unit volume, current and past financial results reports, innovation of product or service, response to adversity, involvement in community-oriented projects and other criteria deemed appropriate by the judges.

Fortuna Logistics enters agreement

Fortuna Logistics, Orlando, Fla., has announced an exclusive affiliation agreement with the National Storm Damage Center that will function to co-market technical services to U.S. contractors aiming to streamline operations. The organizations will co-develop and co-market business solutions that simplify and streamline the requirements for filing storm damage-related insurance claims and to restore properties damaged by severe weather.

Aerialogics enters partnerships

Aerialogics LLC, Nashua, N.H., and IKO, Toronto, have entered into a partnership. The partnership is expected to have added program benefits for IKO's ShieldPro plus+™ and SHIELD Roofing Program roofing contractor participants.

Additionally, Aerialogics and Fortuna Logistics, Orlando, Fla., have announced a strategic partnership that establishes compatibility between their respective technologies along with improvement in the economics achieved for their mutual roofing contractor clients.

Technology compatibility will enable Web-based clients to point-and-click order Aerialogics' aerial measurements reports from Fortuna Logistics' Maxcon Pro toolset and use reported data across the software's feature set. Both companies also will offer discounted pricing on aerial measurement reports and Maxcon software licensing when contractors purchase companion services from Aerialogics or Fortuna Logistics.

Chamberlin Roofing & Waterproofing receives award

Chamberlin Roofing & Waterproofing, Houston, has received the Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC) Inc.'s Eagle Award in the Exteriors—All Contract Amounts category of ABC's National Excellence in Construction Awards. Chamberlin Roofing & Waterproofing received the award for its work on the Houston Permitting Center.

The Excellence in Construction Awards honors innovative and high-quality open-shop construction projects. It honors all team members, including contractors, owners, architects and engineers. The winning projects were selected from entries submitted from throughout the U.S. and were judged on complexity, attractiveness, unique challenges, completion time, workmanship, innovation, safety and cost.

Chamberlin Roofing & Waterproofing restored the Houston Permitting Center, a triple-wythe masonry structure with numerous unforeseen existing conditions, for the City of Houston under the direction of Tulsa, Okla.-based Manhattan Construction Co. Because of the building's age and deterioration, the company patched 380 percent more of the exterior face than originally expected. The project achieved LEED® Gold Certification.

Kulp's of Stratford receives award

Kulp's of Stratford LLC, Stratford, Wis., has received a 2012 Small Business of the Year Award from the Wausau Region Chamber of Commerce, Wisconsin. The award has been given annually since 1981 and was presented during the chamber's Small Business Week. Kulp's of Stratford received the award in the Manufacturing/Commercial Services category.

The Small Business of the Year Award recognizes business growth, community involvement and innovative efforts in the Wausau region. It is an opportunity to review the best business practices of successful entrepreneurs and set a benchmark of excellence for the future.

SRS Acquisition acquires

Cannon Supply

SRS Acquisition Corp., McKinney, Texas, has acquired Cannon Supply Inc., Greenville, S.C., a privately owned independent distributor of roofing materials.

Billy Cannon, Cannon Supply's majority owner, is staying with the company, and his sales and management team will continue to run branch operations. Cannon Supply will retain its operating name to ensure continuity for customers, and staff will report to Tim Hanks, SRS Acquisition's senior vice president of operations in the east.

Former association executive director passes away

John T. Banister, former executive director of the Associated Roofing Contractors of the Bay Area Counties (ARCBAC) Inc., passed away April 24.

Banister was born in Birmingham, Ala., July 29, 1927. After living in various states, his family settled in St. Louis. Banister graduated from Washington University, St. Louis, and served in the U.S. Navy. He married his wife, Eloise, in 1950 and they moved to Orinda, Calif., where Banister became executive director of ARCBAC. He retired in 1995 but continued as a consultant for 14 years before fully retiring when he was 82 years old.

Banister is survived by his wife; children, John and Susan Banister and Carol and Greg McAloney; grandchildren, David, Jason, Allison and Laura Banister and Katy, Robert and Elizabeth McAloney.

ERA names new chairman

The EPDM Roofing Association (ERA) has named John Geary, vice president of marketing for Firestone Building Products, Indianapolis, chairman of its board of directors. He was named chairman at ERA's annual meeting, which was held in Indianapolis in April. Geary replaces Mike DuCharme, director of product marketing for Carlisle SynTec, Carlisle, Pa.

Additionally, ERA named Robert Reale, manager of marketing communications for Carlisle SynTec, chairman of the association's Communications Committee; and Ethan McGraw, product engineer for Johns Manville, Denver, chairman of its Technical Committee.

RICOWI releases hail report

The Roofing Industry Committee on Weather Issues (RICOWI) Inc. has released its Hail Investigation Report of the May 24, 2011, Dallas/Fort Worth hailstorm. The investigation's purpose was to document the effects of hail impact on a variety of roofing products and to describe roof assembly performance and modes of damage for substantiated hailstone sizes.

RICOWI sent seven teams into the field to inspect hail damage. Teams were composed of engineers, roofing material specialists, researchers and roof consultants. Teams examined more than 100 roof systems during a four-day period to evaluate the effects of a significant hailstorm.

The Alliance announces scholarship recipients

The Roofing Industry Alliance for Progress has announced the recipients of its Melvin Kruger Endowed Scholarships for the 2012-13 academic year.

The Alliance awarded a general scholarship to Kara Sosinski of Hudson, Ohio, daughter of Kurt Sosinski, director of product management for Tremco Inc., Beachwood, Ohio.

Additionally, individuals or companies that commit a minimum of $100,000 to the scholarship fund can choose to name a scholarship and participate in recipient selection each year. A Fred Good Scholarship was awarded to Carter Hruby of Fargo, N.D., son of Bill Hruby, service manager with MJ Dalsin Co. of North Dakota, West Fargo. A Dan Cohen Scholarship was awarded to Jonathan Poore of Harrogate, Tenn., son of Troy Poore, territory sales manager for LaFerney Commercial Roofing, Kingsport, Tenn.

In addition, the Alliance renewed seven Melvin Kruger Endowed Scholarships for the 2012-13 school year. The recipients include Gabriella Abbondanza of Southwick, Mass., who is attending Suffolk University, Boston; Alexis Belote of Red Oak, Texas, who is attending University of Texas, Austin; Sean Cawley of Birmingham, Ala., who is attending Vanderbilt University, Nashville, Tenn.; Neil Hourahan of Saunders-town, R.I., who is attending University of Massachusetts, Amherst; and Charanya Kaushik of McMurray, Pa., who is attending Washington & Jefferson College, Washington, Pa. Joseph Baker of Apex, N.C., who is attending North Carolina State University, Raleigh, N.C., and Alexis Plachecki of Taylor, Wis., who is attending University of Minnesota—Twin Cities, Minneapolis-St. Paul, are Firestone Scholarship award recipients.

Each recipient will receive a $5,000 award. Awards are renewable for up to three years of undergraduate study or until a bachelor's degree is earned provided recipients renew annually and maintain a 3.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale (or the equivalent).

A total of $50,000 was awarded for the 2012-13 school year—$35,000 for scholarship renewals and $15,000 for new scholarships.

NRCA University is accepting FEI applications

NRCA University's Future Executives Institute (FEI) is accepting applications for its next program, which will begin Sept. 9-12 at Northwestern University's Kellogg School of Management in Chicago.

FEI is a three-year program focusing on how to lead and manage a thriving roofing business. The program will discuss management, leadership, strategic planning, human resources, financial management, sales and marketing, roofing industry issues, risk management, family relationships and succession, and personal-development skills.

Courses will be taught by Northwestern University professors, industry leaders and field experts. Class size is limited to 30 roofing professionals to allow for in-depth discussions and relationship building.

The application deadline for the 2012 program is Aug. 15. The program is $5,975 for NRCA members and $7,800 for nonmembers. The registration fee for NRCA members who prepay for all three years by the application deadline is $16,500. Books, handouts, most meals, social activities, and a three-night hotel stay are included in the program's cost.
