The Garland Co. introduces GMAX program

The Garland Co. Inc., Cleveland, has introduced GMAX (Garland Manufacturing Attention to Excellence), a new quality-assurance program designed to improve its manufacturing process. The program aims to provide education to manufacturing staff and increase communication among key players in the manufacturing process at the company's Cleveland headquarters.

The GMAX program brings together employees from multiple departments, including manufacturing, product management, research, quality assurance and safety. Employees can visit the newly constructed GMAX Command Center to view product mockups and receive educational product information and real-time information from the product management and quality-assurance teams.

OMG Roofing Products employees win recognition

OMG Roofing Products, Agawam, Mass., has announced three of its kaizen teams have been recognized as 2016 Steel Partners Business System Hall of Fame winners. Kaizens are strategic activities where employees come together to work on targeted improvement projects.

The Steel Partners Business System uses kaizens and other tools to increase sales, improve business processes and reduce waste. Nineteen OMG Roofing Products employees participated in the winning kaizens, which produced a 66 percent decrease in drain assembly output; a 250 percent reduction in overtime; and a $100,000 annual cost reduction related to poor quality.

In addition, OMG Roofing Products has introduced ExpressEdge, a rapid-ship program applicable to the company's commercial roofing TerminEdge Fascia system. Under the ExpressEdge program, TerminEdge fascia will ship within 24 hours or on the next business day after an order is placed. Contractors interested in using the ExpressEdge program have a choice of two Kynar finishes, Bone White or Statutory Bronze, as well as two fascia sizes, 5 1/4 inches to cover two nailers or 6 3/4 inches to cover three nailers. The program was developed to offer roofing contractors fascia products that are quickly delivered to job sites.

EagleView Technology partners with Spookfish

EagleView Technology Corp., Bothell, Wash., has partnered with Spookfish, Bentley, Western Australia, a company focused on the development of geospatial imagery products and services. The companies will collaborate to create technology solutions that enable the capture of higher-resolution imagery in North America.

The partnership grants EagleView Technology an exclusive license to operate Spookfish Capture Platform technologies and sell output products in North America. EagleView Technology also will be able to develop new technologies that give customers the option to update their image libraries at higher resolutions multiple times per year.

CertainTeed acquires metal roofing brand

CertainTeed Corp., Malvern, Pa., has acquired the Matterhorn® metal roofing brand from NRCA member Quality Edge Inc., a Walker, Mich.-based metal roofing manufacturer.

The acquisition expands CertainTeed's roofing portfolio with the addition of Matterhorn's tile, slate and shake metal roofing products and enables CertainTeed to be a consolidated source of asphalt shingles and metal roofing products for distributors and roofing contractors.

In addition, CertainTeed has announced a partnership with weather-forecasting technology company MetLoop LLC, Fort Walton Beach, Fla. CertainTeed will receive exclusive access to MetLoop's weather-tracking technology at a discounted rate. Using the technology, contractors will be able to know whether a weather disaster is going to affect particular buildings.

Advanced Roofing acquires commercial roofing contractor

Advanced Roofing Inc., Fort Lauderdale, Fla., has acquired Pompano Beach, Fla.-based roofing contractor Roof System Services.

The acquisition is the most recent step in Advanced Roofing's statewide expansion. The Pompano Beach location will continue to provide commercial reroofing, maintenance and sheet metal services for local building owners while also offering expanded services including solar energy building solutions, commercial HVAC installations and repairs, and lightning protection services.

Antis Roofing receives award

Antis Roofing & Waterproofing, Irvine, Calif., has received the Corporate Social Responsibility Award from the Orange County chapter of The Association for Corporate Growth. Antis Roofing & Waterproofing was one of nine companies selected to receive a 2016 Association for Corporate Growth Award.

The Corporate Social Responsibility Award is presented to a company that has contributed to the community in a significant way. Antis Roofing & Waterproofing was recognized for its ongoing work with Habitat for Humanity® of Orange County. Since 2009, the company has donated more than 70 roof system installations and more than $500,000 to the organization. Antis Roofing & Waterproofing also supports organizations such as the Pediatric Cancer Research Foundation, the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, and Alzheimer's Orange County.

SRS Distribution acquires distributor

SRS Distribution Inc., McKinney, Texas, has acquired Atlantic Roofing Distributors, North Charleston, S.C., a residential and commercial roofing distributor. SRS Distribution will continue to operate Atlantic Roofing Distributors' three locations under the Atlantic Roofing Distributors name. The locations in Fair Bluff, N.C.; North Charleston, S.C.; and Myrtle Beach, S.C., will continue to provide roofing materials for contractors throughout the Carolinas.

In addition, SRS Distribution has opened four locations in the western states. The locations in Fresno, Calif., and San Diego will operate as Roofline Supply & Delivery locations. A Spokane, Wash., location will operate under the Stoneway Roofing Supply name, and a Fife, Wash., location will be SRS Distribution's third fully dedicated Commercial Distribution Specialist location. All the new locations will carry a full line of roofing products and service roofing contractors, remodeling contractors and homebuilders.

ABC Supply receives award

ABC Supply Co. Inc., Beloit, Wis., has received the Gallup Great Workplace Award, which recognizes the best workplaces in the world in terms of employee engagement, for the tenth consecutive year. The company is one of 35 companies to receive the 2016 award and one of only three companies to have received the award each year since its inception.

In addition, ABC Supply has acquired the assets of roofing products distributor T&C Supply, Flagstaff, Ariz. The acquisition provides ABC Supply with its first location in the Flagstaff area. The location will continue to provide roofing products to customers in the local area.

NWIR announces executive director

National Women in Roofing (NWIR) has announced Ellen Thorp, associate executive director of the EPDM Roofing Association (ERA), will serve as its executive director.

Thorp will continue in her role at ERA while helping NWIR with startup tasks, including daily operations, financial management and governance. She also will help NWIR's board of directors with membership and sponsorship recruitment.

MCA announces new certification program

The Metal Construction Association (MCA) has developed a new Metal Roof Installation Training certification program.

The eight-hour certification program is held during the course of two days. Participants interact with industry experts and receive hands-on training in areas such as substrates, safety, sealants, flashings, panel types and connections, tools, fasteners and maintenance. Upon successfully completing the training program, participants will receive MCA's Metal Roofing Certificate of Completion.

The first Metal Roof Installation Training certification program will take place Oct. 25-26 during METALCON 2016 in Baltimore.

Alliance announces new member

The Roofing Industry Alliance for Progress welcomes John Crum, president and CEO of FiberTite Roofing—Seaman Corp., Wooster, Ohio, as its newest Regent member.

Regent membership is reserved for those who commit $100,000 to the Alliance during a three- to five-year period. FiberTite Roofing—Seaman Corp.'s commitment entitles it to participate in the project task forces established to guide the Alliance's agenda and to attend the semiannual meetings of the full Alliance.

Former SPRI president passes away

Bailie

David Bailie, former president of SPRI, passed away May 24. He was 73.

Bailie was a well-liked commercial roofing professional who held executive sales and marketing positions at Firestone Building Products Co., Indianapolis; GAF, Parsippany, N.J.; Stevens Roofing Systems, Holyoke, Mass.; and USG Corp., Chicago, and served two terms as president of SPRI in 1998-99 and 2011-12. He is remembered for his love of meeting people and volunteering. Bailie is survived by his wife, Colleen; his daughters, Sarah and Suzanne; and five grandchildren.

Founder of Inspec passes away

Jennings

Dwight F. Jennings, founder of Inspec Inc., Minneapolis, passed away May 17. He was 85.

Jennings began his career at Twin Cities Testing Corp. (now Element Materials Technology), St. Paul, Minn., eventually becoming the chief engineer during his 17 years with the company. He founded Inspec in 1973 after recognizing the need for improved practices for waterproofing building exteriors. Jennings is survived by his partner, Claire Peper; his children, David, Dawn'l, Kristin and Stacey; four grandchildren; his brother, Hugh; his sisters, Gwen and Lynn; and Claire's children, Katherine, Marie, Martin, Stephen and William.

Donations may be made in Jennings' name to Mille Lacs Kathio State Park, 15066 Kathio State Park Road, Onamia, MN 56359.

Copper association announces award winners

The Copper Development Association has announced the recipients of the 2016 North American Copper in Architecture Awards. The following NRCA members received awards for new construction: BRI Commercial Roofing, Haslet, Texas, for Parkland Hall at Old Parkland, Dallas; Phinney Industrial Roofing Inc., Columbus, Ohio, for Columbus Museum of Art—Margaret M. Walter Wing, Columbus; and Ramon Franklin LLC, Fort Worth, Texas, for Clearfork Campus, Fort Worth. In addition, NRCA member James R. Walls Contracting Co. Inc., Clinton, Md., received an award for renovating the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution's headquarters, Washington, D.C., and NRCA member Heather & Little Ltd., Markham, Ontario, received an award for its ornamental application on the Hermant Building, Toronto.

CertainTeed Corp. has launched the OneSite mobile app. The app provides roofing contractors with detailed and timely hail reporting data, so contractors can quickly locate storm-damaged roofs. The app can be used on any mobile device and is available at a discount for CertainTeed Roofing-credentialed contractors.

Malarkey Roofing Products has added new videos to the low- and steep-slope education playlists on its YouTube channel, www.youtube.com/user/MalarkeyRoofing/playlists. The videos are part of Malarkey Roofing Products' #KnowYourRoof education series and feature a variety of topics related to roof system installations.

Triangle Fastener Corp. has created its first mobile site, m.trianglefastener.com, designed to help customers select fasteners based on specific application requirements. The site can be accessed on mobile phones, tablets and desktop computers.
