Atlas Roofing expands production

Atlas Roofing Corp., Atlanta, has expanded its production capabilities by adding new equipment to its manufacturing lines to meet the increasing demand for its shingles built with HP Technology, Atlas Roofing's latest advancement in shingle design.

Adding the new equipment to its plants will allow Atlas Roofing to deliver new and improved product lines and ensure Atlas Roofing distributors will be able to fill contractors' orders faster.

Cool Angle named semi-finalist

Cool Angle™ LLC, Brigham City, Utah, has been named a semi-finalist in Cleantech Open's 2013 Cleantech Open Accelerator. Through the competition, Cleantech finds, funds and fosters entrepreneurs to address energy, environment and economic challenges.

Participation in the competition is exclusive, and selected finalists receive in-depth group training, individual mentoring, and access to capital and showcasing opportunities. Cool Angle was selected for its development of a patented asphalt roofing technology that produces directionally reflective shingles that show the homeowner's color preference for asphalt shingles from the ground but appear white in the sun's direction.

Firestone Building Products releases report

Firestone Building Products Co. LLC, Indianapolis, has released its first sustainability report.

The report explains the company's results of its efforts to produce sustainable building performance solutions and reduce its environmental footprint during its 2012 fiscal year. The Firestone Building Products 2012 Sustainability Report fulfills the Global Reporting Initiative's requirements for following principles and indicators to measure and report economic, environmental and social performance.

Metal-Era receives award

Metal-Era Inc., Waukesha, Wis., has been named a 2013 Future 50 award winner by the Metropolitan Milwaukee Association of Commerce.

The Future 50 program recognizes privately owned companies in a seven-county Milwaukee region that have been in business for at least three years and have shown significant revenue and employment growth. Metal-Era is among 22 manufacturing companies acknowledged for 2013. This is Metal-Era's third Future 50 award, achieving Master Mettle status.

CertainTeed announces branding program

CertainTeed Corp., Valley Forge, Pa., has announced its Brand Your Roof™ program. Through the program, distributors and contractors can add their company logos and contact information to CertainTeed's DiamondDeck™ synthetic underlayment. Company information can be printed in three colors within a 24- by 42-inch area repeated across a 10-square roll.

Also, CertainTeed has released its final segment of a three-part educational series. The new video, "Designing with Shingles," provides homeowners an overview of designer shingles with tips and advice for choosing shingles to complement home styles. Other factors involved when selecting shingles, such as durability warranty, curb appeal and home resale value, are highlighted, as well.

The video discusses CertainTeed's Landmark,™ Landmark TL, Highland Slate,™ Independence,™ Presidential Shake™ TL, Carriage House™ and Grand Manor™ shingles. DaVinci Roofscapes® part of giveaway

DaVinci Roofscapes, Kansas City, Kan., partnered with This Old House® Ventures for a second year to be a sponsor of The Great TOH Giveaway. Through The Great TOH Giveaway, consumers entered to win a multitude of prizes. DaVinci Roofscapes contributed two packages of Bellaforté Shake and Bellaforté Slate products each valued at $25,000.

IKO expands service coverage

IKO, Kankakee, Ill., has expanded its sales and services to Arkansas and Louisiana. IKO's southwest region will provide sales and service support to Arkansas and western Louisiana; IKO's southeast region will provide support to eastern Louisiana.

BASF announces collaboration

Florham Park, N.J.-based BASF Corp. has announced a partnership with M Street Homes, Houston. Through BASF's Center for Building Excellence, the companies will collaborate to help build cost-effective and high-performance homes.

M Street Homes is the first Houston-area builder to employ BASF's BEYOND High Performance™ approach, which emphasizes using cost-effective techniques for energy-efficiency and sustainable construction; creating a net-zero impact through the use of renewable energy; participating in active energy conservation; and homeowner education.

The International Code Council® (ICC) and ICC Evaluation Service (ICC-ES) have made their acceptance criteria available online for purchase at shop.iccsafe.org.

IKO has launched its own YouTube channel, www.youtube.com/user/IKORoof. The channel will provide a library of instructional videos in English and Spanish. Homeowners and contractors will be able to share videos, including customer testimonials and business success tips, for an interactive experience.

FallTech® has launched a new website, www.falltech.com. The new website features two-click navigation; more than 1,000 FallTech personal fall-protection products; downloadable spec sheets, manuals and high-resolution images; FallTech training schedule and events; and industry resources, white papers and news.

NSA elects new board

The National Slate Association (NSA) has announced its new slate of officers.

John Chan, principal of The Durable Slate Co., Columbus, Ohio, is president; Robert Fulmer, principal of NRCA member Fulmer Associates LLC, East Hampstead, N.H., is senior vice president; Brian Chalsma, president and co-founder of The Roofing and Remodeling Co., Hampton, Va., and David Large, vice president of NRCA member North Country Slate, Toronto, are vice presidents; and Pete Papay, president of Penn Big Bed Slate Co. Inc., Slatington, Pa., is secretary/treasurer.

CRRC chooses award recipient

The Cool Roof Rating Council (CRRC) awarded David Roodvoets, owner of DLR Consultants, Montague, Mich., with the second annual Marty Hastings Award during its annual membership meeting June 13.

CRRC created the Marty Hastings Award to honor its longtime board member, treasurer and technical committee member who passed away in 2011. The award is presented to a CRRC volunteer who has made outstanding contributions. As part of the award, CRRC makes a $500 donation in the recipient's name to the charitable organization of his or her choice; Roodvoets selected The Conservation Fund.

CRCA technical director passes away

Bob Booth, former technical director for the Canadian Roofing Contractors Association (CRCA), and his wife, Irene, passed away July 23 while cycling across Canada. Booth was 65, and Irene was 69.

Booth was a 2009 recipient of CRCA'S Frank Ladner Award, an award that recognizes a person for his or her technical contributions to the roofing industry. He was an initial member of the International Council for Research and Innovation in Building Construction and the International Union of Laboratories and Experts in Construction Materials, Systems and Structures' joint roofing committee, playing an important role in developing the committee's direction, and he assisted with the logistics of the 1991 International Symposium on Roofing Technology in Montreal co-sponsored by NRCA.

The Booths are survived by their children, Daniel, Sally and Tamany; grandchildren, Kate, Anna and Nathaniel; and siblings, Raymond, Joan, Richard, Susan and Rachael. Memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Society of Canada, 20 Eglinton Ave. W., #1600, Toronto, ON MKR 1K8.

ARMA selects award recipients

The Asphalt Roofing Manufacturers Association (ARMA) announced the winners of its 2012 Accident Prevention Contest during its board meeting in May. Fifty-nine roofing manufacturing facilities were recognized for their outstanding safety records during 2012.

Atlas Roofing Corp., Hampton, Ga.; CertainTeed Corp., Wilmington, Calif.; GAF, Baltimore; and GAF, Michigan City, Ind., were presented with President Awards, the highest honor a facility can receive. NRLRC elects new officers

The National Roofing Legal Resource Center (NRLRC) elected its new officers during NRCA's 126th Annual Convention Feb. 3-7 in San Antonio.

Scott Kawulok, project engineer for B&M Roofing of Colorado Inc., Frederick, Colo., is president, and Bob Morgan, chief operating officer of Upstate Roofing & Painting Inc., Rochester, N.Y., is vice president. Alex Hernandez, vice president of Clark Roofing Co., Broadview, Ill., serves as NRLRC's immediate past president. The officers' terms began June 1.

NRCA offers management program

NRCA will hold its second Executive Management Institute (EMI) program for seasoned roofing executives. Through the program, executives will learn from Evanston, Ill.-based Northwestern University's Kellogg School of Management professors and industry experts; apply learned concepts through a competitive team project; receive one-on-one company-specific feedback about assignments; and network with industry peers.

The program will begin in November and end in February 2014. EMI will consist of two face-to-face sessions with time to read and plan in between. For more information and to apply for the program, visit www.nrca.net/emi.
