GAF receives award

GAF, Wayne, N.J., has received WomenCertified® Inc.'s Women's Choice Award® for a second year. In a customer satisfaction survey conducted by WomenCertified, GAF received excellent scores in several areas, including overall sales experience, and nine out of 10 female customers reported they would recommend GAF to friends and family.

In addition, GAF built another custom motorcycle with Paul Teutul Sr., owner of Orange County Choppers, and donated the bike to a veteran Aug. 5 at a Kid Rock concert held during the annual Sturgis® Motorcycle Rally™ in Sturgis, S.D. The donated motorcycle was featured on a new Country Music Television series during an episode that discussed GAF's Roofs for Troops rebate program.

Also, GAF's Gainesville, Texas-based TPO membrane manufacturing facility now is a validated UL Environment Landfill Diversion Rate facility. Launched in 2012, UL Environment's waste diversion claims are specific and measurable, allowing companies to prove their environmental leadership to the marketplace. The Landfill Diversion Rate claim may be validated if a facility achieves an 80 percent or greater landfill diversion rate; GAF's Gainesville facility earned an 88 percent landfill waste diversion rate.

GAF also now offers Deck-Armor™ and Tiger Paw™ Custom Logo Programs for GAF factory-certified contractors and distributors, allowing a company to add its logo as large as 13.75 feet by 24 feet to either of the roof deck protection products.

Duro-Last opens new facility

Duro-Last Inc., Saginaw, Mich., has opened a new manufacturing facility in Carrollton, Texas. This is Duro-Last's fifth manufacturing facility and fourth location to offer full-service production and support for roofing and edge metal products.

CertainTeed partners with Penn State

CertainTeed Corp., Valley Forge, Pa., has partnered with Penn State University, University Park, Pa., to construct a solar power training facility for students and building professionals at the GridSTAR Center in The Navy Yard in Philadelphia. Expected to be completed later this year, the GridSTAR Center will feature CertainTeed's solar roofing products and serve as a hub for workforce training, building performance testing, energy management research and "smart" microgrid modernization deployments.

Lapolla Industries signs contract

Lapolla Industries Inc., Houston, has entered into an exclusive relationship with MVL Group, Dubai, a construction supply management company providing services to companies concentrated in the Middle East and North Africa within the defense, construction and engineering industries.

Siplast representative passes away

L. Kent Cottle, former representative for Irving, Texas-based Siplast, passed away July 29. He was 70 years old.

Cottle worked for several waterproofing and roofing companies in the Denver area for more than 35 years, including Douglass Colony Group Inc., Commerce City; Jagger Roofing Contractors, Commerce City; and Black Roofing Inc., Boulder. He attended The University of Mississippi, Oxford, and served in the U.S. Navy, receiving the Antarctica Service Medal and the National Defense Medal.

Cottle is preceded in death by his parents, Vivian and Basil; sister, Eleanor; and brother, Roy. He is survived by his wife, Carol; daughters, Cheryl and Jennifer; sons, L. Kent Jr. and Joseph; eight grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.

Roofing Solutions sponsors gala

Roofing Solutions LLC, Prairieville, La., served as primary sponsor for The American Institute of Architects' Baton Rouge Chapter's 2013 Rose Awards Gala July 26. The gala recognized excellence in architecture, renovation, addition, residential and unrealized project design.

Twenty-four projects were nominated, and six received awards, including Mid-City Gardens Residential Development, Baton Rouge, for which Roofing Solutions installed the roof system.

Roofing contractors pass away

Two roofing contractors recently passed away. David Huntington, chief financial officer (CFO) for AAA Roofing Co. Inc., Indianapolis, and son of former Midwest Roofing Contractors Association President Bob Huntington, passed away Aug. 8. He was 50 years old.

Huntington was born Aug. 31, 1962, in Indianapolis and was CFO of AAA Roofing for 31 years. He is survived by his parents, Bob and Mary Ann; sister, Lynn; brother, Jim, president of AAA Roofing; and several nieces and nephews.

Earl "Bud" Farrell, an Army veteran and founder of Farrell Roofing and Sheet Metal Co. Inc., now known as Hallmark Farrell Roofing Co., Houston, passed away July 23. He was 84 years old.

Farrell is preceded in death by his parents, B.F. and Hattie; two brothers; five sisters; the mother of his two children, Lou; and daughter, Donna. He is survived by his wife, Sandy; son, Earl "Buddy" Farrell Jr.; grandson, Brian; granddaughters, Jennifer and Deanna; great-granddaughters, Madeline and Emily; and numerous nieces and nephews.

A memorial service was held Aug. 3 at Salem Lutheran Church, Tomball, Texas. Memorial contributions may be made to Love 146, www.love146.org, or Love 146, P.O. Box 8266, New Haven, CT 06530.

Wife of NRCA board member passes away

Christine Hamlin, wife of former NRCA board member Bill Hamlin, president of Hamlin Roofing Co., Garner, N.C., passed away Aug 6. She was 70 years old.

Hamlin was dedicated to preventing blindness and was a long-term Prevent Blindness North Carolina board member. She also was a Red Sword Guild founding member, Junior League of Raleigh's Community Advisory Board member, and a member of the boards for the College of Humanities and Social Sciences at North Carolina State University and North Carolina Museum of History.

Hamlin is survived by her husband, Bill; her daughters, Katherine and Christina; her son, William F. III; and her grandson, William F. "Drake" IV.

Saratoga Roofing ranked fastest-growing

Saratoga Roofing & Construction, Oklahoma City, has been named one of the Greater Oklahoma City Chamber's Metro 50 for a second year. The Metro 50 are the metropolitan area's fastest-growing privately owned companies with revenues of at least $1 million and are ranked based on percentage of annual growth.

In addition, Inc. magazine ranked Saratoga Roofing No. 50 on its seventh annual Inc. 500|5000 list, a ranking of the nation's fastest-growing private companies. Inc. also ranked Saratoga Roofing & Construction the fastest-growing Oklahoma company and No. 1 on its Top 100 Construction Companies list.

The Inc. 500|5000 ranking is according to percentage of revenue growth when comparing 2009 to 2012. Qualifying companies must have been founded by March 31, 2009; be U.S-based, privately held, for profit and independent as of Dec. 31, 2012; and have minimum revenues of $100,000 for 2009 and $2 million for 2012.

FRSA presents awards

The Florida Roofing, Sheet Metal and Air Conditioning Contractors Association (FRSA) held its first Spotlight Trophy for the Advancement of Roofing (STAR) Awards dinner during FRSA's 91st Convention and Trade Show in Orlando. FRSA created the STAR Awards to recognize outstanding roofing projects in Florida. Submissions were awarded in 16 categories, including roof system type and contractor size by revenue.

Mule-Hide Products Co. Inc. has redesigned its website, www.mulehide.com, making it easier for visitors to find products and information. The site features several paths to access product information; sections explaining roof system types; installation videos; a submittal request tool; and tools designed to help warranty-eligible contractors manage their Mule-Hide-warranted jobs. The password-protected warranty section also has been enhanced for warranty-eligible contractors.

IKO recently uploaded two new videos to its IKORoof YouTube channel, www.youtube.com/user/ikoroof. IKO's "Is Your Contractor Fully Insured?" video explains the importance of contractors carrying general liability and workers' compensation insurance. IKO's "Running the Numbers" video introduces a new, free tool to make sales forecasting, advertising budgeting and other business activities easier for contractors, focusing on lead and close rates as the base numbers for other calculations.

Englert Inc. has introduced iRoofing, a mobile app to help contractors, architects, building owners and homeowners research projects and order samples and roofing materials. The app features a roof visualizer that lets users photograph any structure and add an Englert metal roof to it using any of the company's roofing profiles and colors. The app is available through Apple's App Store or the Android Market.

Surefire Social™ has launched a Facebook fan page app, www.surefiresocial.com/fbapp, to help businesses streamline their online marketing and manage their Facebook app tab pages with one integrated solution. The app combines lead generation tools with content management abilities and features fan page plug-ins that allow businesses to publish pages via Wordpress without using a third party; existing Google analytics to make it easier to measure traffic, leads and other important metrics; and simplified content posting.

Atlas Roofing® Corp. has announced Atlas ProAPP™ for contractors registered on Atlas' Signature Select website. The app features EagleView® Technologies' high-resolution aerial photographs and patented technology and offers a fast, mobile alternative for placing, receiving and storing roof reports.

MVP applications are available

The Roofing Industry Alliance for Progress is accepting applications for its 2013-14 Most Valuable Player (MVP) awards program, which is open to roofing contracting, distributor and supplier firms.

The program formally recognizes employees who, under typical circumstances, may not be publicly recognized for their efforts or eligible to participate in company recognition or incentive programs. Winners are chosen based on their significant contributions to one or more of the following areas: outstanding on-the-job performance; on-the-job safety performance; contributions to a team effort; community service and volunteerism; and other noteworthy contributions and activities.

MVP winners will receive two complimentary airfares and two nights' hotel accommodations during NRCA's 127th Annual Convention Feb. 24-28, 2014, in Las Vegas; one complimentary conference registration and exhibit hall pass to the 2014 International Roofing Expo®; two complimentary tickets to NRCA's Cocktail and Awards Reception; and a $100 American Express gift card. Additionally, one MVP winner will be chosen to be Professional Roofing's Best of the Best, an award co-sponsored by OMG Roofing Products Inc., Agawam, Mass., and will be featured in an article in Professional Roofing.

Each person nominating a candidate for an MVP award will be eligible to win an iPad2 16GB with Wi-Fi. And each person whose name is submitted as an MVP nominee will be placed in a drawing for a $100 American Express gift card. SPRI distributes technical bulletin

SPRI, Waltham, Mass., has distributed Technical Bulletin 1-13A, "Summary of SPRI Membrane Manufacturer Photovoltaic (PV) Ready Roof Systems and Services," a set of general guidelines related to roof assemblies ready for PV system installation and services designed to provide maximum protection for a roof while maintaining warranty coverage.

SPRI developed the bulletin to raise important questions for business owners to consider when installing a PV roof system, such as the added weight of a PV array, impact of wind and fire approvals, and other issues. Potential PV system-specific requirements from manufacturers also are listed, including how to maintain existing warranties; project documentation forms frequently required to install the PV system over an existing warranted roof; and general issues and additional services such as roof system and solar integration single-source warranties.

Scholarships are available

The Roofing Industry Alliance for Progress is accepting applications for its 2014-15 Melvin Kruger Endowed Scholarship Program. The program, administered by Scholarship Management Services,® a division of Scholarship America,® is available to assist NRCA contractor and supplier member employees and their families.

Employees and their families who plan to pursue post-secondary education in college and vocational programs are eligible for the merit-based scholarships. Scholarship recipients are selected based on academic record; potential to succeed; leadership and participation in school and community activities; honors; work experience; a statement of education and career goals; and an outside appraisal. Financial need is not considered.

Scholarship recipients will receive funding for full-time study at an accredited post-secondary institution of the student's choice. Each scholarship recipient will receive a $5,000 award renewable for up to three years of undergraduate study or until a bachelor's degree is earned. Recipients must renew annually and maintain a 3.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale (or the equivalent).

Applications must be completed and mailed along with a current and complete official transcript to Scholarship Management Services. Entries should be postmarked no later than Jan. 31, 2014.

Building code packages are available

NRCA now is offering three building codes packages in a new Building Codes section of the NRCA Bookstore: NRCA's 2012 International Building Code Package, NRCA's 2009 International Building Code Package and NRCA's 2009 and 2012 International Energy Conservation Code Package. The packages include the NRCA and International Code Council (ICC) publications needed to ensure compliance with various building codes.
