WHAT IS YOUR POSITION WITHIN YOUR COMPANY?

I am senior manager, partner programs, North America for GAF in San Antonio.

WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST JOB?

Delivering newspapers on my bike when I was 12 years old. I was known for my ability to “porch it”—the process of hitting the center of a screen door with the paper so it would fall straight down onto the welcome mat.

WHAT IS THE MOST UNUSUAL ROOFING PROJECT OF WHICH YOU HAVE BEEN A PART?

We completed a 120,000- square-foot coal-tar tear-off and cold fluid-applied polymer-modified bitumen roof system application on the Phillip Morris headquarters in Richmond, Va. The roof was just outside the Phillip Morris executives’ floor-to-ceiling windows, and they watched us like hawks all day. The work was brutal because of 100 F weather and 95% humidity! We weren’t offered water, but the staff did offer each of us a pack of Marlboros each day. It never occurred to them to ask me if I smoke—I don’t! Was it oversight on their part or strategy?

WHY DID YOU BECOME INVOLVED IN THE ROOFING INDUSTRY?

Other than people who are born into this industry, I believe most of us just end up here—that was certainly the case for me. After school, I was offered an opportunity with a roofing contractor in Los Angeles and quickly discovered I was being paid well to help others. The industry is a good fit for me and my values. Fast forward many years, and the industry has been incredibly good to me and my family. I could not think of a better industry to build a career in; I only wish more people knew how rewarding the trades can be.

WHAT SONGS ARE YOU LISTENING TO OVER AND OVER?

Most songs by Marc Anthony because I am a “Salsero” at heart!

WHAT’S THE MOST EXCITING/ ADVENTUROUS THING YOU’VE DONE?

I spent seven years in the Marine Corps doing many exciting things I can’t tell you about because my mom would be pretty upset if she found out!

WHAT ARE YOUR FAVORITE STRESS RELIEVERS?

I ride my bicycle every morning and try to kayak at least a couple of times per month. Otherwise, you can find me hiking in the woods on weekends or sitting on top of a hill at night stargazing with a good glass of wine.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE FOOD?

I’m a foodie, and I love anything delicious. But my favorite part is the discovery of amazing new dishes. I spent a couple of weeks in India in 2020 where every meal was the best I’ve ever had. The food blew my mind!

WHAT QUALITIES DO YOU MOST ADMIRE IN A PERSON?

Work ethic, honesty and drive.

PEOPLE WOULD BE SURPRISED TO KNOW ...

I’m an avid grease monkey, classic car guy and woodworker.

IF YOU COULD TRAVEL ANYWHERE IN THE WORLD, WHERE WOULD YOU GO? WHY?

Machu Picchu—I read an article about it when I was in college, and the image and history still mesmerize me today.

MY FAVORITE PART ABOUT WORKING IN THE ROOFING INDUSTRY IS ...

Helping others. I’ve helped many roofing professionals and instituted marketing initiatives that made their phones ring and developed sales processes to effectively convert leads. This has helped create successful businesses that change the lives of the owners and their employees for the better. Helping others help themselves, their employees and their customers brings me immense satisfaction and is the primary reason I have remained in this industry.
