Scholarship applications are available

The Roofing Industry Alliance for Progress is accepting applications for its Melvin Kruger Endowed Scholarship Program.

Administered by Scholarship America, the scholarship program is available to assist employees of NRCA contractor and supplier members who plan to pursue post-secondary education in college or vocational programs. Scholarship recipients will receive funding for up to four years of full-time study at any accredited post-secondary institution of the recipient's choice.

Each scholarship recipient will receive a $5,000 award. Awards are renewable for up to three years of undergraduate study or until a bachelor's degree is earned provided recipients renew annually and maintain a 3.0 grade point average on a 4.0 scale (or the equivalent).

Scholarship applicants must be full-time employees of NRCA contractor or supplier member companies or employees' dependent children or spouses. Employees must have a minimum of one year of full-time employment with their companies as of the application date, and the company must be a member in good standing with NRCA for a minimum of one year. Awards are granted without regard to race, color, creed, religion, age, gender, disability or national origin.

Interested students must complete the scholarship application and mail it with a complete official transcript to Scholarship America no later than Jan. 31, 2010.

NRCA University to hold vegetative roof system conferences

NRCA University will hold Vegetative Roof Systems for Roofing Contractors: Your Rewards, Responsibilities and Risks, a one-day contractor-focused educational conference, in several cities. The conference is based on the technical guidelines in The NRCA Vegetative Roof Systems Manual, Second Edition and addresses vegetative roof system benefits, terminology, waterproofing membranes, construction details, growth media and plant selection, building and energy code compliance, and business and legal issues.

The conferences will be held Oct. 14 in Denver; Nov. 19 in New York; Dec. 3 in Washington, D.C.; and Jan. 26, 2010, in Orlando, Fla.

Energy-efficient roof systems manual has been updated

NRCA has updated Guidelines for the Design of Energy-efficient Roof Systems, which is intended for design professionals who want to specify energy-efficient roof systems, as well as for individuals who need to meet the requirements of the recently updated ASHRAE 90.1-2007, "Energy Efficient Design of New Buildings Except Low-Rise Residential Buildings." The manual is best used with The NRCA Roofing Manual: Membrane Roof Systems—2007 and the Moisture Control section of The NRCA Roofing and Waterproofing Manual, Fifth Edition.

Online registration is open for the 2010 IRE

Online registration is open for the 2010 International Roofing Expo® (IRE), which will be held at the Morial Convention Center in New Orleans Feb. 22-24, 2010.

Vegetative roof publication is available

Green Roof Construction and Maintenance provides comprehensive information to help readers skillfully design, construct and maintain vegetative roof systems. Written by Kelly Luckett, a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED®) Accredited Professional and industry expert regarding vegetative roof system design and installation, the publication explains how to design a vegetative roof system, plan for irrigation and drainage, select and place soil and plants, and maintain the entire system.

Additionally, the publication discusses return on investment, LEED design specifications and vegetative roof system benefits.

NRCA's annual report and membership directory are available

NRCA's 2008-09 Annual Report is available online. The report provides a comprehensive summary of NRCA's activities and accomplishments during the year.

The report includes messages from Rob Therrien, NRCA's immediate former president, and Bill Good, NRCA's executive vice president. It also includes information about NRCA's membership; communications and marketing efforts; education and risk management activities; technical resources; legislative involvement; environmental initiatives; international activities; partnerships; charitable contributions; leadership; and financial data.

Shingle recycling forum to be held in Chicago

The Construction Materials Recycling Association will present the 4th Asphalt Shingle Recycling (ASR) Forum in Chicago Nov. 5-6. NRCA is one of the event's sponsors.

The 4th ASR Forum will address the environmental benefits of using recycled shingles in road construction; value of recycled asphalt shingles in hot-mix asphalt; shingle recycling specifications and ongoing research; and alternative end uses and processing techniques.
