GAF develops newshingle recycling process

GAF, Parsippany, N.J., has announced its new patented shingle recycling process has successfully produced the industry’s first asphalt roofing shingles containing recycled material from post-consumer and postmanufacture waste shingles.

The process represents an important milestone in delivering more sustainable, affordable roofing materials and has significant implications for improving sustainability and circularity across the roofing supply chain. The process reduces the amount of raw materials required to make new shingles without compromising product quality or performance. During testing, GAF reclaimed more than 90% of the waste shingle material by weight to be reused in the manufacture of new shingles. GAF additionally demonstrated its ability to manufacture new shingles containing up to 15% recycled material that are UL-certified for their safety and effectiveness. The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office issued GAF three patents for the process.

GAF is committing more than $100 million to bring the recycling process to commercial scale, including funding a pilot operation in 2021 for additional research and development to assess the maximum amount of recycled asphalt that can be used to make new shingles.

IKO® helps women’s shelter in California

IKO, Wilmington, Del., partnered with the Southern California council of National Women in Roofing and other industry partners to repair damage to Alexandria House caused by an electrical fire.

Located in Los Angeles, Alexandria House is a transitional residence that provides safe and supportive housing for women and children moving from emergency shelters to economic stability and permanent housing.

In March 2020, the second and third floors of the house caught fire and the roof system was damaged. With a roof replacement estimate in excess of $70,000 and other significant damage to address inside the building, the home’s development director reached out to NWiR’s Southern California council for help.

NWiR council Chair Maria Alcala contacted Juan Trujillo, IKO’s territory sales representative in the Los Angeles metropolitan area.

“This whole project began when Maria, who works at RoofLine and is a member of NWiR, called and asked if IKO would be able to donate materials to help restore the house,” Trujillo explains. “IKO and its distributor, RoofLine, were able to provide 6,000 square feet of shingles for the project.”

Thanks to product support from IKO and RoofLine, as well as labor donated by Final Touch Construction, roof construction wrapped up in mid-March 2021. The building now has 60 squares of IKO’s Cambridge® Weatherwood Cool Plus architectural shingles, which were used to comply with California’s Title 24, Part 6 cool roof requirements.
