The Garland Co. receives app award

The Garland Co., Cleveland, was awarded a Cleveland Tech Award for the development of its Roof Builder app during an awards luncheon at The Ritz-Carlton in Cleveland March 22.

Exclusively available to Garland sales representatives, the Roof Builder app helps representatives demonstrate the construction of a roof system to customers by virtually building a roof system. Once a roof is constructed within the app, the final product can be saved and emailed. This allows customers to share the 3-D rendering with other construction professionals involved with a project. DaVinci Roofscapes recycles 820,000 pounds of waste

DaVinci Roofscapes, Lenexa, Kan., has announced the company recycled 820,000 pounds of composite scrap during 2017. The excess shake and slate roofing tiles were crushed, ground down and used to create starter tiles.

"The big story this past year is that our company molded 30 percent more pounds of roofing tiles than in 2016 while simultaneously reducing our scrap by 242,000 pounds over the past year," says Bryan Ward, vice president of operations for DaVinci Roofscapes.

DaVinci Roofscapes produces polymer slate and shake roofing tiles in 49 standard colors plus custom colors. Each time the manufacturing operation changes color runs, there is a transition period between colors. Transition tiles are "off spec," cannot be used and are recycled. The tiles are segregated by color, ground up and molded into starter shingles, which are generally unseen on the roof.

DaVinci Roofscapes also invested in a new blending system to make manufacturing operations more efficient, enabling the company to avoid selling scrap to other companies or sending it to landfills during the year.

"Every year we take stock on Earth Day to evaluate the progress of our recycling operations and share the good news about our enhanced efforts," Ward says. "We're on a path toward continually making our operations more efficient, which is great for the environment."
